There are pro athletes who go broke. It's better for them to get started a few years earlier? I disagree with the notion that this be allowed. Should the universities give a little more "spending money" to the athletes, sure... Make the athletics departments cover those costs (except for UL. We would go broke...).
They get a full ride. That, and maybe a little extra to cover the "cost of attendance" and that's it. They don't get to have scholarships and get to be independent contractors too.
If as a student, you have a full academic scholarship, you can still have a job and have the ability to make money off of your image and likeness, athletes should have that same ability.
Last year a story broke about a basketball player losing his eligibility due to creating a business. It was a fashion line if I remember correctly...why should someone not do something that betters their life? Is that not what we are teaching kids to do? A regular student is congratulated for keeping up his grades and still building a small business, but we punish an athlete for it. If a kid has the ability to make money off of his image and his talents, I am all for it and nothing you say will change my opinion.
Full academic scholarships (to my understanding, never had one) only cover the cost of tuition and books? Athletes get this, as well as food and clothing.
Don't get me wrong. If an athlete's image/name is used as promotion for by a company, they should be paid, like you or I would be if we were asked to be a part of a promotion (unless we waive the agreement). I just don't think an athlete should be allowed to do promotion for any company while on scholarship with a university.
This is going to be the demise of college athletics. They want to be paid, then I hope the money is taxed!
"They" is the catch word but in reality it was the O'Bannon brothers vs NCAA.
Everyone knew though if "they" won, it would then apply to everyone else who we now refer to as "they."
