Pontiff Classic Tickets Now Available

  UL -Tickets to the sixth annual Wally Pontiff Jr. Classic are now on sale, announced the Wally Pontiff Jr. Foundation, LSU and the University of Louisiana. This year’s game, featuring Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns and the host LSU Tigers, is scheduled for April 22 at Zephyr Field in New Orleans.

All tickets cost $15, except children under two years of age, who will be admitted free. Group accommodations are available.

Tickets are available at several outlets: the Ragin’ Cajuns ticket office located in the Cajundome front office, over the phone at (337) 265-2100 or on the Web at RaginCajuns.com; the New Orleans Zephyrs ticket office at Zephyr Field, over the phone at (504) 734-5155 or on the Web at ZephyrsBaseball.com; or Ticketmaster.com. The Ragin’ Cajuns will occupy the third-base dugout for the game, with first pitch slated for 7 p.m.

The Wally Pontiff Jr. Foundation was established in memory of LSU’s All-SEC third baseman who died in 2002 at age 21 due to heart abnormalities. Proceeds from the Classic will benefit numerous charitable organizations in the New Orleans area.

Zephyr Field is home to the New Orleans Zephyrs, AAA-affiliate of the Florida Marlins. Opened in 1997, the park holds 10,000 spectators and will admit its 5,000,000th fan this season. Zephyr Field was the site of an NCAA Super Regional in 2001 and the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in 1998 and 1999.

UL finished with a 30-29 record in 2008, tying for fifth in the Sun Belt Conference, but rode a mid-season rally into the conference tournament semifinals. In 2009, they look to 21 returning letterwinners, four returning redshirts and 13 newcomers to build on that momentum, seeking not only a conference tournament championship but their 12th team appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

LSU made its 14th appearance in the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., in 2008, and begins the 2009 season ranked first in the nation by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and second according to Baseball America and the National College Baseball Writers Association.

Got mine yesterday. 2 tix were under $40 for right behind the plate. I love Zephyr Field too. Great atmosphere for hopefully a great game.
