Thread: This guy can coach, Ray Harper

  1. UL Basketball This guy can coach, Ray Harper

He is currently an assistant at WKU and has had two head coaching jobs with a 342-63 record and an 84.4% winning percentage.

He did use an ineligible player once which brought conference sanctions.

He obviously has a liking to the Kentucky area but is not afraid to leave. This is the kind of coach UL should be looking for. Someone who has worked with a small budget and shown he can coach up players. Ray Harper

ray harper is not going anywhere.

nice job by turbine to know who he is. ray has never been in trouble with the ncaa. his former school ky. wesleyan was. nothing came back on ray. it all came back on the compliance officer. and it hurt several sports, not just hoops.

ray left owensboro ky and built ok. city into a nat'l chamionship winner in very short time. all he does is win championships. a lot of folks couldn't believe he'd come into wku as an asst. after being the head guy for so long in his career.

this was a long term move by ransdell and selig. they realize that if k-mac is successful he'll only be around for 3-4 years max. and they've positioned themselves to turn it right over to harper.

by then he'll be in his mid 50's. he has told friends of mine he doesn't want to leave the commonwealth again. his wife is from here. his family is all of 2 counties over. wku can afford to pay up to 500k per year to keep a coach but can't compete with the 800k- 1m that sec schools offer our coaches.

but the thinking is that ray could be here for awhile if k-mac leaves. that 500k living in the commonwealth is a good living wage. he does have a degree from wku so he has big red in his blood.

i could be wrong and he could jump at the first d1 job offered to him but i'm telling you what the word is around here.

i honestly feel bad for you guys to see how far you've slipped but with your budget constraints i'm amazed you're competitive at all. r-lee seems like a good guy but in college athletics you gotta put w's in the column. good luck if ya'll do decide to make changes.

    Thanks Dahbeed

I was just thinking it would be woth about 600G for UL to get a coach who had been in the WKU locker room the previous season.

ps it crossed my mind he might be a coach in waiting.

Former Lady Cajuns head basketball coach J. Kelly Hall set UL up sweet nd pretty the same way except the administration didn't see the logic.

This is so COOL Re: This guy can coach, Ray Harper

turbine, we also reap the benefits of his knowlege right now. my sources say he is invaluable during practices. if you watch during the game, you'll see that k-mac is definitely in charge during timeouts. he's the one doing all the talking.

but harper's hoops knowlege is unreal. and he knows every ref in the country. they all love him too. that won't stop them from teeing up k-mac but it's bound to help a little.

    and rgncjn12....

if i luck out and hit a homer in a softball game would you call me barry bonds?

if i luck out and hit a 3 pointer to win a friendly game of hoops would you call me michael jordan?

no? then why is it that if i slip up one time with a sheep you wanna call me a sheepfokker?

i don't get it. sheeps need good good lubbins too!!!

    Dahbeed,

Glad you could roll with the punch. In all seriousness, when did that go down with the frats, wasn't that about 4-5 years ago?

Good luck, hope ya'll make another nice tourney run. Right now our basketball team probably would be a 15 seed in the Womens tourney.
