Wow I didn't notice that. 41 is just ridiculous. Maybe some of those 4 and 3 star guys are ones that they are taking chances on.
Still, they are recruiting on another level than the other Sunbelt teams. Two 4 stars and eleven 3 stars is pretty crazy.
Lets not kid ourselves. Did anyone read yesterday's paper about the last few years of local recruits? Over half of those kids aren't playing football and most aren't in school. Troy does this hoping the non-qualifiers that they connect with a JC return to Troy.
I know the theory is that many of these kids will not qualify but Troy is hoping that the few that do can come in and contribute. But just for the sake of argument what happens if all or at least most do qualify? Is Troy obligated to honor their offers and is there any penalty to Troy for oversigning?
Great question. It seems like Scott Farmer could do a good job of explaining Troy's recruiting philosophy and the associated details. It is very strange that Troy is unique in signing so many over the limit. However, it is hard to dismiss that they have been quite successful in football.
Before someone goes the "scruples" route in condemning Troy... I would sure like to know if they are breaking any rules or truly taking substantial risks. If it turns out someone says that they are... but they never pay a penalty... and continue to succeed... UL may need to review this philosophy for ourselves... or a modified version.
Rivals has Troy listed with 41 signees this year. One of Troy's recruits is listed twice but still 40 is a hugh number. Evidently even the recruiting services can't keep it straight since Scout has Troy signing 33 recruits. According to Rivals the next closest class size is Hawaii with 32 signees and several schools at 30. This is a tremendous difference between Troy and everyone else in America not to mention the SBC. What are the rules? Obviously Troy is banking on at least 10 of these signees not enrolling this year. It certainly points out the absurdity in basing your team recruiting rankings on the the number of signees. If Troy could've signed 80 maybe they could have won the recruiting championship over LSU and Alabama.
NCAA FBS teams can bring in 25 new players on scholarship each year.
Troy had a lot of guys that will go to junior college or will grayshirt. That includes the guys that grayshirted last year, too.
A lot of the JUCO guys Troy got this year it had signed in the past.
So what ahppens if 28 of these 40 are eligible and Troy cannot convince any of them to greyshirt or go JUCO? Can the extra three guys hold them to the LOI? And is Troy then penalized?
Just as the ncaa uses the APR to punish schools for not having their players keep up with academics maybe there should be some tightening of the rules on the front end. Its crazy to be oversigning like this year after year.
No, Troy will convince any guys over the limit to go to prep school, JUCO or grayshirt.
