It has nothing to do with recruiting. You can do more ACL specific conditioning and exercises in order to help prevent it, which I would imagine they do now.

Not sure if it's true or not, maybe some of you PT or Kines guys can answer, but I have always heard that women athletes are a lot more likely to have ACL injuries than male athletes.

The risk is higher in females. Some is associated to females having different biomechanics. Typically, women knees tend to be more turned in or toward the midline of the body.

Unfortunately it is true (daughter tore her ACL a year ago) and the majority of ACL injuries (especially women) are non-contact injuries. Over the past couple of years it has started gaining a lot of attention in the medical community. Assessment programs are being developed to try and determine who is more prone to ACL injuries along with exercise programs to help prevent them. I know in soccer there are some clubs and teams that are teaching specific techniques on how to avoid knee injuries.
