Just read a biography of John Kennedy Toole I got for Christmas. We've had a BCS like program English faculty over the years. No doubt about it.

One of my all-time favorite classes was a creative writing course I took with what I still think was one of the very BEST professors there: Dr. Darrell Bourque.

And look at the writers who have come through: Ernest Gaines (member, American Academy of Arts & Letters, National Critics' Circle Award, Macarthur "Genius" Grant), John Kennedy Toole (posthumous Pulitzer, for a book with characters for which UL faculty are models), best-selling author James Lee Burke, and now Rikki Ducornet (LA Times Book of the Year, Kellogg Award, and numerous others).

And don't forget, we also have Abdelhak Serhane... no one's ever heard of him, because he writes in French.

He writes about North Africa, and is considered a major writer throughout the Francophone world.

I read it in my Louisiana Literature class. Rumor was that the central character Ignatius Reilly was modeled after the very professor that was teaching the Louisiana Literature course.

A lot of people think Maurice Duquesnay was the model for Ignatius.

It was actually Bob Byrne.
