UT Baseball Coach Suspended

Today's Houston Chronicle stated that the UT baseball coach, Augie Garrido, was suspended indefinitely for being arrested last night for DWI. He is suspended pending investigation, with pay. His annual pay: $800,000. For a baseball coach! That is more than UL's football and basketball coaches make combined. And, he is slated to have $50,000 increases over the next 4 years to take him to $1,000,000 by 2012. All of that and he gets to live in Austin. If convicted, he may have thrown all that away.

What?? UT has won multiple national championships in baseball as well as several other sports. UT baseball is arguably #1 in the country. Garrido is the career leader in coaching victories in major-college baseball with a record of 1,668-777-8 in 39 seasons. In 11 seasons at Texas, Garrido has guided the Longhorns to two national championships (2002 and 2005) and appearances in the College World Series in five of the past eight seasons.
Garrido also won three national titles with Cal State- Fullerton. Garrido received a $160,000 raise as part of a five-year contract finalized in November that will push his base salary to $800,000 this season. With an annual $50,000 raise, Garrido will make $1 million in 2012.

Successful coaches at UT are paid exceptionally well because they win at the highest level, because of attendance, because they generate the dollars to do so, and because there are expectations of winning. Their facilities are perhaps the best in the country and certainly as good as any BCS program. As a result, they win. Texas has over 50,000 students and is one of the largest universities in the country. EVERYTHING UT does is top drawer. Their alumni support is outstanding. They are one of the nation's top 5 academic public universities. And, they don't hold down other universities in Texas in doing so. UL can only dream of one day being what UT is academically and athletically. That should be our model, not a Southern Miss.

First UT is a great academic institution. They are probably one of the best public schools in the US.

Athletically, they are closer to a professional franchise than a college. UT is what is wrong with big-time college athletics. The amount of money they spend on athletics is obsene. For basketball that have the best facilites in the US. How many Chapionships has that gotten them? In football they spend money even when they do not have to (paying the D-coordinator a rediculous sum so he can be a head coach in 7 years!).This has gotten them one championship. Also look at the players they produce. Most are pampered head cases. Vince Young, Ricky Williams, Roy Williams anyone?

I would hate to be a fan of the teasip$. Most of the time the deck is stacked so heavily in their favor the games are not even fair (or fun). In the few cases where they have to face somone on an equal footing they usually fail.
Because of the extreme wealth of a few teams (UT, Ohio St, USC) other BCS teams have had to engage in an all out arms race to keep up with these 3. Now the super-teams play almost all of their OOC games at home so they can make even more money. Call me a cynic, but that is why I so love OSU, OU getting beat every bowl season and UT getting a beatdown in front of its fans in the NCAA's last year.

Impressive. Sounds like Augie is underpaid. My question is who is going to replace him? Shouldn't they be paying some assistant 500K so he can take over the program in 5 years. Also, I hear the players lockers are only the size of a small room. How will they be able to beat Texas St in these cramped quarters?
Look, UT has great programs. I just like to root against teams that have every advantage imaginable.

Their budget is over 100 million/year. They have so much money they renovate their stadium every few years instead of enlarging their endowment. Face it they are the New York Yankees of college sports. My statement is a little over the top, but like the Yankees money does not ensure championships and I enjoy it when they lose.

The only people I know who refer to Texas fans as Teasips are Aggies who have an inferiority complex when it comes to UT.

UT's endowment is something like $1.5+ Billion. UT athletics is totally self-supporting as all athletics should be. A long time ago, UT understood the importance of athletics to the university and built an athletic department that today is arguably #1 in the country. Over the years, UL's leadership chose not to do that and today we are paying for it.
