Thread: VT Football: Too Soon List of Successors Revisited

  1. Default VT Football: Too Soon List of Successors Revisited

Mark Hudspeth - This guy's hair is on fire for football; for his players. for their education and maybe for hot chicks, too. It's only a matter of time before someone takes this guy who's making $750K at 45 for the LA-LA's.

Yes, the same Directional Louisiana Rajun' Cajuns that Rickey Bustle led to 41-65 record in 9 years.

Huddy has won everywhere he's been 66-21 at UNA (North Alabama) including 5 Gulf South Championship appearances and 2 Championships (Div II).

At ULL, he's amassed a 27-12 record and 3 bowl wins v. San Diego St, ECU and Tulane in his first 3 years.

I first came across Huddy while he was at UNA doing camps around the Southeast and learned why he's such a well respected guy. He's a magnet - everyone, every demo is drawn to him, football fan or not. He's the deep south version of Lunch Pail having worked his way up at Delta State as a player to his coaching stints at Central Arkansas and Nicholls State until his break came at Navy in 2001.

He built a sustainable program in Florence, AL and was picked by Dan Mullen to be his first OC at Mississippi State prior to taking the reins at Lafayette.

My guess: Again, another guy that won't last much longer, who is one of a few hand-in-glove fits for Blacksburg.

The two schools were in a virtual tie, and both had amazing turn around years the hear Jake Delhomme was a freshmen.

VT never looked back and the rest is history. Let's hope Louisiana never looks back (again) as far as repeating history goes.

"Huddy"? Some of these homer writers are a piece of work. They write in such heavy "tailgate sling lingo" it's a joke. Every major school looking for a football HC... has Hud somewhere on their list. If this guy was trying to convince VT fans to embrace Hud, his comments didn't do it IMO. That fell short as a promotional resume for Hud.

That writer makes me want to puke. To much ESPN lingo trying to be hip , cool.

He wasn't the OC at Miss state either. Wide receivers coach if I'm not mistaken.

    So serious question:

What did VT have at the time to push ahead that we didn't have?

I'd like to know where their budget, facilities, conference situation, etc. were at the time.

In the 20 years prior to 1992 VT averaged half a win more than UL.

They used their success to get in a better conference.

UL used it's success to let Boise State take its place in their conference.

More like what they did not have: Raymond P Authement.

Ok guys, call me crazy, but I honestly believe that Hud is here for a while. He is basically leading the $115 million dollar athletic plan. He has reconstructed his contract to long term deals several times already. This program is his baby and I believe he plans on raising this baby and bringing this program to big things. And let's think about it for a second, LSU, Bama Oklahoma, OK State, Texas, Michigan St...all these big time programs have coaches they are happy with. The only place in the SEC that would give him a call would be Kentucky or some crap place like that. Hud has just as good a chance to win a national championship here as he does with a program like that. He makes over $1 million a year now, and when he goes 8-4 and wins a bowl game we praise him. Why would he leave that for a place will fire him for sub par performance? I believe he is here to stay. He talks about Lafayette like he was born and raised here. He either plans or staying here or he's a hell of an actor and say what people want to hear. And money does talk. But that's just what I think. Geaux Cajuns.

Florida is not sold on their coach, and you also have to understand there are unexpected consequences when one program loses a coach, a domino effect so to speak. A successful season IMO will land HUD a big time job in 2015, SEC, ACC, or the right Big XII. The only way he does not get that call is if we fall off. I do not want to fall off.

A side note, VT and USL were never in the same boat, they always were in a superior situation, or conference until their in state rival pushed for their inclusion into the ACC. That will never happen in Louisiana, never at any level CUSA, AAC. We have to make it on our own and hope there is not a serious effort to blackball us.

    So serious answer:

    A giant set of balls.
