Scott has not been in Louisiana long enough to recognize the most fundamental law of the local economy. Our resources are directly related to the price of oil. He may not have noticed it has dropped $100 in the last six months. Although layoffs have not started yet, they are being discussed amongst the service sector side of the business. No way are our resources unlimited.
He should have said that our resources are "untapped"... not "unlimited". That would have been a massively understated fact. UL has one of the largest disconnected alumni... especially for a school that at its core is some serious "emotion". "All you have to do" to connect those alumni and get them to invest is to make them believe (know) that the old guard is not in charge of the money. PS The US has a national economic crisis issue that will hammer many other US universities far more than UL. "Others" have created a huge dependency on the influx of cash. We... "fortunately?"... operate on a shoe string budget... and I can still tie my shoes if you cut my shoe strings by 10%... if you know what I mean.
Again, we are in an "untapped" situation as far as funding goes. I really need to talk to Scott Farmer.
Please do, I believe you have good ideas and the passion behind them. You also are a loyal UL Alum and fan. I would only hope that if you or others were able to penetrate the cloud of muck, otherwise known as the UL athletics dept., that you would not get worn down with how they operate (in a vacuum), and become a disgusted loyal fan that doesn't care anymore.
Scott generally answers emails. Send him your concerns at sfarmer@louisiana.edu.
I understand what you're saying... and I have heard every excuse from UL alumni and would-be fans... for not supporting UL athletics. But, we get nowhere chastising them. We will regather the larger portion of our flock when our feeding grounds offer up what they like served... big-time college sports... no sooner. Personally, I will be waving them in for the landing when they return. We cannot have it both ways.
