I'm not interested in any lip service either, and like you I need to see some tangible improvements. When I say improvements, I don't mean just facilities but in performances of certain programs.

I've given as much time as I can in trying to help this athletic program. And I will do what I can to help funding. I just wanted to hear from others if anything is going to be enough for them to give money to this program. Some people may not be convinced on Feb. 4th with what is revealed. _
Thanks for the response. I truly appreciate your insight and what you do for the University.

I don't know if personally, I can commit more than I already do financially to the University, but a solid, detailed plan sure would make me get excited and look under my car seat for a little extra change.

Just out of curiosity Clutch, what is the feel on campus for the mascot and name issues? I graduated in 93 when it was USL, so I don't know what the students are thinking these days.

The Mascot gets laughed at by most of the people I know but its not an issue I have talked about with many people.

The name issue I believe is dead among students...I know Cajun fans who call us UL L and they are good fans. Most are uninformed about the issue so they just call us what they see and more often than not they see UL L. In all fairness nothing has been done with this generation of students to inform them about what happened and what continues to happen with the name...I know a vote was taken one of my first years on campus about whether the student Gov't should push more about the name but nothing more was said about it after the vote was cast.

Bingo! This has to be the only significance of the date.

National Signing Day for football is always the first Wednesday in February

Just to comment as a student on the mascot thing, we are all terribly embarrassed by that friggin pepper....

To be more precise, by all I do mean a vast majority. I also have family members who were athletes here at USL who are equally as embarrassed.

After the vote (which was overwhelmingly in favor supporting the name change), a formal document was drawn up stating the student body support for the name "University of Louisiana" and our encouragement to discontinue the use of "at Lafayette" in common usage in all areas of the university but most particularly athletics. I handed this document to Dr. A myself.

The purpose of the student vote was twofold. First, to raise awareness of the name issue among students. I knew that I personally had no idea the importance of the issue before visiting this site. By the end of the year, I think we had a very informed group of students, and SGA did what it could to push common usage of UL and University of Louisiana whenever possible. Second, we wanted to formally document the viewpoint of the student body to the administration, so that, if the time ever came, this viewpoint could be another piece of ammunition in the uphill battle for the name change.

Right before I left, I also encouraged the faculty senate pass a similar resolution, but I don't think that ever went anywhere. I also don't believe that much else has been done on the SGA side, but I'm not sure that there is much left to do. That being said, you can still notice that most student-produced t-shirts (SGA/UPC) do not include "at Lafayette". I really liked this year's "We are Louisiana" shirts...but I doubt most of the general student population really understood the significance of that statement.

My suggestion would be that every 3-4 years, the name issue be brought up again among the students. This keeps up awareness for a new generation of students AND serves as a continuing sign of student support.

Agreed. I like the pepper as a secondary logo, but Cayenne needs to go. Bring back the Chicken and have a live bulldog. University heritage.

Exactly, I cannot name a whole lot that we still do, that was around when I was a kid. Besides, I'm not sure he even resembles a pepper, it is already a stretch. Beyond that, the idea that our mascot literally is a vegetable is kind of absurd. If we must do food, why not boudin or andouille sausage?

well, how bout this.. let's get a professional to come in and design some unis and have the public vote on them.. try them for a year and see what type of response they get.. they dont have to be dramatically different. I know people are stuck on our school colors, but like someone said, they are not even vermillion and the helmets look like they are a different red then the unis... me?. I would like a shiny black helmet with louisiana or UL in script on each side in white and Cajuns across the chest and black uni's with "suttle" red trim and white numbers. these could be our away or home unis... I just really would like to see something different than what we have JMO..

So lets put our nawgins together and try to come up with something original yet not embarassing.. well , let's see.. the pelican would be kind of stupid.. the gator would be good if not taken already. the " big ass cajun head man was kind of a joke".. the chicken doesn't make sense..the "bulldog was great but faded".. a big boudin linkman would probably look silly too. unless he would be eatable...." that's a joke".. I really can't think of a mascot that would "stand out" and be recognizable to the country that we all could be proud of.. I really wish someone could come up with something so unique it would start a tradition..what symbolizes cajuns that we can be proud of?..this is very tough.maybe if we steer away from the "critters" and concentrate on a "symbolic issue".. the saints have their fleur delis. maybe if we put our heads together some ideas will surface... cuz , really, the pepper isn't getting it..
