Thread: Worst Case Avoided. UL Takes Brunt of UL System Budget Cuts

  1. Support Worst Case Avoided. UL Takes Brunt of UL System Budget Cuts

BATON ROUGE - Higher education officials are breathing easier after receiving notice that their budgets would be cut only about half of what they were told two weeks ago.

Gov. Bobby Jindal on Tuesday afternoon laid out a plan for solving a $341 million deficit in the current year's budget by imposing a 3 percent across-the-board cut. He described the process as "the state needs to tighten its belt."

By passing the cuts around, instead of focusing on higher education and health care, the two largest budget items not protected by the constitution, higher education would be cut $55 million - instead of the $109 million announced two weeks ago. The Department of Health and Hospitals, which has the largest state budget, is to be cut $118 million, instead of $160 million.

We talk about bad headlines for The Advertiser. But man oh man, is that a VERY misleading thread title.

    How so?

The UL cuts are still .76 of worse case projections.

Except for Nicholls the other schools are being cut .58 of worst case.

The worst case scenario was not avoided. UL is still taking the brunt of the budget cuts.

"Higher education escapes major budget cut"

Here is a bad headline from a person who can't do math.

UL was actually going to do better than most, because with normalization of funding our budget increased the most, and with the tight-fisted management of the previous administration, we were in a very good situation.

So some of the smaller schools were asking that UL be cut even more.

As it is, we're looking great. We're much better at dealing with cuts, and we have much better reserves.

I guess the headline could have read . . .

Even though the worst case scenario has been avoided,
UL still takes the brunt of the budget cuts
for schools in the University of Louisiana System.

This fits my definition of socialism--spreading misery equally.

In a sane world, most of these smaller schools would have been closed down years ago or converted to community colleges.

Doesn't even have to be a sane world...just a world that doesn't include the state of Louisiana.

Funny thing is we will survive nicely despite the whiners, bit.chers and moaners.

Sure have plenty of those on here. Whew, I need a break from these people. I'm sure glad I don't associate with those types.

Have a great New Year Mr. Z.
