"semi-fanatic"... sounds like an oxymoron... or maybe a "semi-oxymoron". I think you are a temporary participant because of your daughter. No big deal. This is a forum with lax rules, with the exception of certain language. All views are welcome... to be scrutinized.
IMO not every "fan" has to be a fanatic. Obviously its better to have more fanatics or people who live and breathe UL sports. But it is possible to have more friends and supporters who pull for you but aren't as fanatical as the hardcore fans. I didn't go to UL so I don't have the same emotional attachment for it as I do for my alma mater. But I do pull for the Cajuns and enjoy the games, etc. in part because they are the local team.
Latex getting an Independence bid is a non issue. They were owed a bid from years ago. I know that.
What chaps most Cajun fans' hindends is the I Bowl matching them with 6-6 NIU. We would have easily quadrupled NIU's 2000 tickets sold. We've had great fan support on the road at Houston, at Monroe, USM, at LSUAMCBR and most especially on numerous trips to the Super Dome so nothing less would have happened at the I Bowl.
Had NIU been 7-5 or better or another LaTex opponent been 7-5 or better then Cajun fans would not have the legitimate gripe we do.
Getting 7 or more wins as someone suggested elsewhere was a great idea. We would likely have been in the Texas Bowl if we had and that would have been the best of all. So, here's to the Cajuns getting those 7 wins in 2009 as suggested.
fan (făn)
n.
An ardent devotee; an enthusiast.
[Short for FANATIC.]
No big deal... all are welcome... including welcome for criticism if they participate. IMO Fans are generally people with a solid emotional attachment. They wear the garb, talk the talk, walk the walk, and focus on the object of their affection. I don't find it that difficult to identify a fan of something... unless they are a social deviant... it usually surfaces in one form or another. But again, all are welcome... regardless of what label they claim... including welcome for debating their concept of "fan". IMO
... a lot of empty seats, but it wouldn't be a stretch to call it 35k to 40k... I guess this means it would have been overflowing the 50k available if the Cajuns would have been invited. But worse yet, it would have been exciting... and we would have throttled Tech. It looks like everything worked out just as Missy and Derek dreamed. Congrats... seriously.
We do use a lot of oxymorons and incorrect phrasiology. It isn't the bending and twisting of terms and phrases that is of issue... it is a matter of honesty... what you call yourself as opposed to what you are usually gets revealed in time. I do believe there is a fan "pyramid" (as I like to call it) and it includes all of the oxymoron phrases of the modern use of "fan". Calling yourself a fan, regardless of the qualifier, has to involve some emotional attachment to the object of devotion. Why use "fan"... derived from "fanatic"?
I like anyone and everyone to be included who want to participate... whatever they call themselves.... just don't lie about it.
