Along with oil, gas and seafood, Louisiana’s bountiful production includes one of the nation’s highest per-capita rates of players in the N.F.L. According to a 2006 survey, Louisiana led the league with one player for every 58,802 residents. No area of the state is more fertile for football than the stretch of the Mississippi River that runs from Baton Rouge through New Orleans and 75 miles southward to the Gulf of Mexico.
