With a record of 6-3-1 the 1940 version of Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns grabbed the championship of the Louisiana Intercollegiate Conference.

The new McNaspy Stadium was ready and Johnny Cain's Southwestern Louisiana Institute Bulldogs planned to play five of its ten games in 1940 - for the first time taking on Mississippi State in football.

"The Bulldogs have met State in boxing and other sports," The Advertiser reported. "The Bulldogs will also make their first bow before a Louisiana State Fair crowd on October 26, when they meet Louisiana College."

Outstanding returning veterans included Milton Patin, "six-foot end who is a potential All-American." Tackles included Ed Adams, Jack Spence, Wylie Alexander, John Ramsey, Carroll SLUssi and Wilson Broussard, "all 200-pounders." Guard candidates were Tom Bickham and Lawrence Dodd, but Cain was looking for a center to replace C.W. Oakes and Bill Bass, who would not be on hand for the 1940 season.
