Default Auditor: I-Bowl Has A bleak Future

    ITEM 11 from the 2008audit:

    "11. Going Concern
As shown in the accompanying financial statements, the Foundation incurred a net decrease in net assets of $452,336 during the current period due to reserving the accounts receivable from its title sponsor for $800,000. This results in the Foundation having a deficit in net assets of <$376,529>.

In response to this situation, management has implemented an expense reduction plan as well as a plan to increase sponsorship revenues from various state and local governments, individuals, and companies.

Because it is unclear whether the Foundation will be successful in accomplishing these objectives, there is uncertainty about whether the Foundation has the ability to continue as a going concern. The financial statements do not include any adjustments that might be necessary should the Foundation be unable to continue as a going concern."

And thier fearless leader told Perott that they were sound financially??? The City advanced the bowl some cash, but may never see it again.

If they are truly trying to increams sponsorship revenues, wouldn't they invite a regional team. Not just the Cajuns, but Arkansas State would have worked. I doubt they will bring in many sponsorship dollars from Illinois when compared to what they could have brought in rom Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, and Tennessee. Of couse, what do I know. I'm drinking beer and watching the Saints on a Thursday night.

If they didn't want an in-state match-up, they could have with a straight face walked into the committee room in Baton Rouge in January after inviting Arkansas State and explained they were using tourism dollars and wanted an out-of-state team and ASU would have brought more fans than any other out-of-state team they had to pick from. They could explain that Little Rock is basically equidistant from Shreveport and the Mississippi casinos but is Shreveport is getting killed in that market and it provided a chance to draw first time visitors from that region.

Of course that assumes the game is going to try to carry on.

I think they are in a pickle for the future. There is no doubt that ESPN is going to throw money into the Birmingham game and try to move to at least #8 in the SEC pick order and may try to scoot past Memphis and/or Nashville as well. They are looking at the #9 from the SEC.

On the Big XII side, Houston is going to likely try to move up the order as well and with NFL Network's fight to become relevant, they may invest the money to try to snag the #7 pick away from Shreveport. Likewise, ESPN trying to keep NFL Net from being relevant may choose to throw money into their game in Fort Worth to grab the #7 pick as well. Shreveport could end up falling to a #8 or #9 pick from the Big XII.

If they go into 2010 as SEC #9 vs. Big XII #8 or #9 they are likely to be vacant more years than not.

Ergo, they will either die or become increasingly dependent on the alleged secondary bowl tie in with the sunbelt.

Which, again shows how incredibly short sighted those fools in S____port are.

Wouldn't it be great in 2009 to have the luxury of telling the I bowl to take hike?

The game is going to struggle this year under the best of circumstances, add in a threat of freezing rain as happened just a few days ago and they'll be lucky to pay for the lights with the concession stand money.

They need a major sponsor to stay where they are in pick order and they are going to struggle to find one in this economy. Two months ago I would have said one of the natural gas companies sinking wells all over Arkansas, Texas, and Louisiana would be a prime candidate but even they are scaling back now.

I believe firmly that the market can support 34 bowl games, but the successful ones are going to follow the corporate world.

ERT (ESPN Regional Television) now manages Birmingham, Fort Worth, Las Vegas, New Mexico, Hawaii, and St. Pete.

The Holiday Bowl manages itself and the Poinsettia

Citrus Sports manages the Capital One and Champs Sports bowls.

    Fiesta manages itself and Insight.com

Multiple management makes sense. I had insisted to my friend on the I-Bowl committee when the New Orleans Bowl was displaced that they needed to grab the game, dub it the Louisiana Bowl and move it to Shreveport because then they could package their sponsorship jointly while adding very little administrative costs. There have been rumors that the folks in Mobile considered adding a second game playing one pre-Christmas and one post-New Year for the same reasons.

The I-Bowl is a mom and pop business. It doesn't have the strength of the old games like the Gator, Sun, and Cotton.

If they don't make it, some forward looking group will probably take their slot and combo it with something they already have.

DeKalb, Illinois is about 900 miles from Shreveport while Lafayette is about 200 miles away.

Chances are that more NIU fans would elect to stay at home and drink egg nog in front of the tube.

Plus, UL-LTU have a long history of playing one another which has for the most part ended the past 10 years. It has local appeal and state dollars are helping support this event.

    You can't spin this one. Bye-bye I-Bowl.
