He'll be in the good shape to take over the PG spot in Brooklyn when Kyrie burns out again. Both NY franchise will struggle for the next two years. Elfrid will get a plenty of triple double pairing with RJ Barrett but the Knicks organization won't get any better til there's an ownership change
Former Ragin' Cajun Elfrid Payton is leaving the New Orleans Pelicans.
16 million, 2 years.. Let NYC chew me up and spit me out.. Not worried about EPs mental frame of mind, or whether he plays..
Read an article in the NY Post. Said they believe that EP will beat out Dennis Smith Jr. He really wanted to resign with the Pels but after trading for Favors yesterday they were at the cap. He would have left several million dollars on the table to stay with the home town team. As you think of what was best for he and family in the long run, choice was easy. If he does well there, the Cajun program may get a little publicity in the biggest market in the country. Good news in many ways.
Elfrid Payton will not be returning to his hometown Pelicans next season.
In a perfect world, he would've been able to stay, but I understand the Pelicans' cap situation and sudden logjam at guard. I'm happy that Elfrid got an opportunity in a massive market and is going to be well-compensated, but the Knicks and their fans are not only insufferable, they're stuck in a Patrick Ewing-fueled hey-day that never really existed. They've never been a team in the modern era that's had any sustained success or won a bunch of championships, but they still think they're the basketball mecca. They made some good signings over the past couple days with Elfrid, Julius Randle, Bobby Portis, and Taj Gibson, and most other teams would see that as a really good first step in a rebuild (because they had NO good players on that team after they traded Porzingis), but unless they have a massive turnaround and are in contention for the Eastern Conference Championship (they won't be), it probably won't be enough for the Knicks fans based on the fact that they think they were robbed of a chance to have Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving because of incompetent ownership. That may or may not be true depending on who you listen to, but I know enough to know it likely won't be a great situation.
I don't think that happens with this team. If you've seen the Knicks signings thus far, they are going to literally be a blue collar team this year. They are bringing in team oriented guys this year who are mostly veterans. Their record likely won't be as bad as many people think but they also won't have star power.
Former Louisiana standout Elfrid Payton opens the 2019-20 NBA season as the lone former Sun Belt Conference men's basketball player on the league's active opening-night rosters when the regular season officially tipped off on Tuesday.
Great for E. Not too good for the SBC. The only former conference player still playing in the association.
