It takes them out of bowl eligibility and there are more teams that are looking in than bowl openings.

I think this is explained in another post. If Rutgers and Arizona State would have won that would be two more teams we'd have to contend with.

Simply put, if Zona State wins, Zona goes to the Hawaii bowl, creating a trickle down effect. Zona would mean that Hawaii is not in play for western Michigan or ND, meaning a greater likelihood that they go to one of the game we want to play in.
