But isn't that why there is "stoppage time"....the actual play did stop, they just don't stop the clock. Seems like a remnant of the technology available when the sport was originally developed. And now it's just a tradition, even though it's easy now to track the time stopping and starting. This has nothing to do with why I don't like to watch soccer, I just don't enjoy it....but it does seem strange.
Honestly soccer is so different from our primary sports here in the U.S. (football and basketball) that a lot of people have a difficult time making the transition. The biggest thing I see in youth soccer is the inability of the parents to understand the laws of the game and they get frustrated with what they see as a lack of consistency. However soccer is about trying to maintain the flow of the game so offsides isn't always offsides and a foul isn't always a foul. The referee's have a lot of discretion in what is allowed. In American football and basketball the rules are much more clear cut and thus the American spectator is wired for that type of game.
My kids have played the game for a long time and that is what got me into soccer. If it hadn't been for that I would probably be complaining about all the world cup coverage but instead I'm trying to catch as many games as possible.
Check out @63:55 of Nigeria Argentina match...Nigerian player gets arm snapped by team mate's shot.
Impact was at 61:33...dude actually took a few steps before he went down. Yeah, now tell me soccer is a _____ sport...
Omg!
A friend of mine fell out of a lawn chair and snapped his wrist. Lawn chair lounging is also a brutal sport!
Two Ghana players were kicked off the team today for fighting. This is a good thing for US right?
Depends. If this means Portugal wins like 3-1, it's awesome. If it means Portugal wins like 5-1 or 6-1 ... it's bad. We need Portugal to win a pretty close one.
With that said... this USA game is going to be a mess. Major flooding in Recife right now. I bet USA-GER ends 0-0. Neither team is going to be able to take a lot of chances on a flooded field and risk exposing themselves to a cheap goal that sends them out. In that case, nothing Portugal or Ghana do would matter.
USA game on Univision !
