Honestly soccer is so different from our primary sports here in the U.S. (football and basketball) that a lot of people have a difficult time making the transition. The biggest thing I see in youth soccer is the inability of the parents to understand the laws of the game and they get frustrated with what they see as a lack of consistency. However soccer is about trying to maintain the flow of the game so offsides isn't always offsides and a foul isn't always a foul. The referee's have a lot of discretion in what is allowed. In American football and basketball the rules are much more clear cut and thus the American spectator is wired for that type of game.
My kids have played the game for a long time and that is what got me into soccer. If it hadn't been for that I would probably be complaining about all the world cup coverage but instead I'm trying to catch as many games as possible.
