Boy......Camaroon is flat terrible
I love both, but I can't for the life of me understand the logic that says baseball is fun, but soccer is boring.
Last night at the CWS, TCU and Virginia played 15 innings. 5 hours. There were 4 "points." Everyone complained about the lack of "action" and "scoring."
If it's not on XBOX, America isn't going for it.
That 0-0 Brazil/Mexico match was one of the most exciting sporting events I've seen in a long time. Virtually non-stop action.
But America would rather watch a game that lasts 5 hours, and probably has about 4 minutes of action the entire time.
Boggles my mind.
There are soccer games that are boring. Just like there are football games that are boring.
But the reasons Americans often give for hating the sport are pretty lame.
People can like whatever they want. No worries. But soccer has points that make it an American game, if we are willing to embrace it.
Why was the 3 point line added in basketball? So you couldn't just stick a tree in the lane and dominate the little guys. The 3 pointer is the great equalizer.
Guess what? Soccer has a ton of those. Why did we beat a more athletic, faster, more skilled, more experienced Ghana team? Strategy, sound defense, hard play, and a refusal to give up. That 2 hours had more action than your 5 hour CWS game.
But that's just me. I think Americans are missing out, big time.
This team has scored in the 90th minute and the 86th minute to snatch victories in 2 of its last 3 world cup games. The third went to overtime.
Boring? Hardly.
What's so great about the Stanley Cup playoffs? Every shot, you're on the edge of your seat. Right?
That's soccer, all day, every day. Every shot could be the dagger.
It's tense. It's intense. From the jump.
That's as American as sports gets.
JMO.
Nice post.
I don't think most Americans understand the skill it takes to score goals such as Cahill's or Van Persie's, much less the assists that led to them. Top quality goals usually fall in line behind the 3 dunks we've all seen before and the 2 home runs that didn't matter in a 7-2 game. Don't know if it will ever change.
The best part about soccer...no god damn commercials every 5 seconds like Football. It's 45+ minutes of action...one short break...and 45+ more minutes of action.
