I would venture to say that any goal scored in this tournament would be world class. I mean it is the WORLD CUP
after all.

My thoughts exactly. Bet Ghana wishes they had one more "high school" goal like Dempsey scored.

Countries like Brazil shout, "Yeah, we won 3-0. But it wasn't BEAUTIFUL."

Count me in the group who would consider dempsey's goal world class. The first touch to maintain possession while continuing his momentum towards the box, the re direct to avoid the last defender in the box, and the slot to the outside post with pace were all 1st class. You could make the argument since the defender was in a compromised position defending inside the box he was therefore forced to defend cautiously (notice the defender had to pull back his left leg after dempsey's re direct for fear of a trip and resulting PK), but dempsey's first touch perfectly compromised the defender.

Had messi made the same touch/slot, there would be no argument.

For Messi it would be expected...he does that kind of thing nightly...so you are right it would be no argument. But Messi has done so much more...and at several top levels of competition.

Trust me...I want to be wrong...but I don't see how we get another W in this group. The talent differential cranks up exponentially with the next two opponents. I see a draw from Portugal if they continue their France 2010 style implosion. That is all we need. Beating Germany...if they play their bottom barrel reserves...maybe.

The own goal from the Brazilian cat was anything but World Class...it was actually...less than World Class. That guy is lucky he didn't cost Brazil a game...they may have found him in 10 different pieces with his head on a stick. Those Brazilians love their futbol.

Didn't say I wasn't excited about the win. Didn't even argue that our strategy was to let Ghana run themselves tired and hope they didn't execute. If we play the same game against Germany and Portugal, we will get our asses handed to us. Analysis similar to that resulted in people talking up Dempsey's goal like it was other-worldly, which it wasn't. We won. I'm ecstatic. We better shape up before the weekend. The next two will not be easy and we can't depend on Portugal and Germany shooting themselves in the foot.
