Thread: 2008 Bowl Season Louisiana Snubbed by Indi Bowl

  2. Default Personal foul: Bowl whining

The political football is being kicked around again, and that's never good.

This time it literally is about football, as state Sen. Mike Michot said the PetroSun Independence Bowl's decision to invite Northern Illinois University, rather than the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, is "a slap in the face to our university and to Louisiana taxpayers."

Michot, who is chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, said because the state gives $359,160 annually to the bowl game, it is obliged to invite teams from Louisiana.

No problems here. A mildly interesting read.
Same here. Some people are reacting like the L'Staters did to the piece dealing with 1001 reasons to hate LSUAMCBR they ran a couple of years ago.

How dare UL or Mike Michot question the integrity of the Indy Bowl!!! How dare! And how about all of those "volunteers"? Shout Out! This "big charity" function in Shreveport that donates to the Women's... the Children's... the Homeless... ahhhhh... the Shreveport Casinos (the economy gets a cut... the state gets a cut... the rest goes out of state)... is one of the most heralded of all bowl events "in the Nation".

Do any of these journalists have even a smidgen of pride anymore. Not only has Mike Michot and those who represent constituents in Lafayette questioned the judgement of the Indy... but many will be pleased to know that other state legislatures (outside of Acadiana) have agreed to the audit. They aren't joining UL's claim of a snub... but given the data... they too think it warrants evaluation.

The Huskies need to have over 7500 fans invade Shreveport, with cash flowing like a geyser, in order to squelch the audit. We shall see... we shall see.

The game is going to struggle this year under the best of circumstances, add in a threat of freezing rain as happened just a few days ago and they'll be lucky to pay for the lights with the concession stand money.

They need a major sponsor to stay where they are in pick order and they are going to struggle to find one in this economy. Two months ago I would have said one of the natural gas companies sinking wells all over Arkansas, Texas, and Louisiana would be a prime candidate but even they are scaling back now.

I believe firmly that the market can support 34 bowl games, but the successful ones are going to follow the corporate world.

ERT (ESPN Regional Television) now manages Birmingham, Fort Worth, Las Vegas, New Mexico, Hawaii, and St. Pete.

The Holiday Bowl manages itself and the Poinsettia

Citrus Sports manages the Capital One and Champs Sports bowls.

    Fiesta manages itself and Insight.com

Multiple management makes sense. I had insisted to my friend on the I-Bowl committee when the New Orleans Bowl was displaced that they needed to grab the game, dub it the Louisiana Bowl and move it to Shreveport because then they could package their sponsorship jointly while adding very little administrative costs. There have been rumors that the folks in Mobile considered adding a second game playing one pre-Christmas and one post-New Year for the same reasons.

The I-Bowl is a mom and pop business. It doesn't have the strength of the old games like the Gator, Sun, and Cotton.

If they don't make it, some forward looking group will probably take their slot and combo it with something they already have.

Partially correct. He plans to go there in the buff the night before and fertilize the field.

  8. UL Football Tim Brando: Answers to your I-Bowl questions

You may have read that Louisiana Tech head football coach and athletic director Derek Dooley took me to the verbal woodshed at the Independence Bowl announcement party a little over a week ago.

Beware, coach, of the wounded commentator that gets to use an occasional pen in the hometown newspaper.

It was a great evening and the turnout of volunteers was inspiring.

In the end, that's why I love this bowl game.

As you know, I'm not a real advocate of the bowl system. But the games themselves are not to blame.

IMO Wrong Waters will not be able to find his way there. He is relying on a map provided by the I-Bowl. They assured him it was accurate and up to date. He even had a press conference to announce his pleasure with them sending him the map endorsed by Clark Griswold!

" With apologies to south Louisiana legislators, this was a television decision. Had UL been 7-5 and not 6-6, the Ragin Cajuns may have had a legitimate argument. They didn't and they don't. "

9.5 million in the chicago metro area .. 4.5 million in the state of louisiana

ps. anyone else hear the rumor that howard told the motor city they didn't have to give FAU the payout monies?
