I lived in Stokes my first year, I was lucky enough to have a room to myself, but still had to share the bath with 6 others. It was definitly a learning experience on how to get along with others and how to give and take in different situations. I was on the top floor so lots of steps, but the biggest drawback was sneaking girls in was rough.

All this speculation is fun but does anyone know what will be built there?

The last implosion was quite exciting. I'll definitely make the next one.

It's a shame that these long-standing buildings must come down, but I am always in favor of improving our facilities on campus.

And that is not usually a term of respect.
although i dont disagree with you in principal, there should be more dorms, but i know nobody has lived in bancroft for at least a year or so, they were in bad shape and required constant maintenance, I never said there shouldnt be a campus community, just that those two are in horrible shape

at the same time though, i dont think any university is going to do that much better on what percent of students live on campus. I mean we have what nearly 20k students, we already require any freshman who dont live within 50 miles to live on campus for x amount of time. I dont remember ever wanting to live on campus as a student. So short of forcing the issue your not going to have a large majority of students living on campus, short of upping the quality of campus housing exponentially. I dont believe there is that great a market for on campus housing.

Most colleges I am aware of require ALL underclassmen (not just Freshman) to live on campus. We have always been very liberal about allowing students to live off-campus, mainly because we have never (in my 35+ years) experience had adequate number and (usually) quality on-campus housing. I understand the desire to live off-campus, but it really ruins the campus community atmosphere to have nearly all of your student body disassociated from campus and any possible campus activities. This is, of course, my humble opinion. And it does not mean I oppose razing the 2 dorms. They are not habitable anyway. Either renovate them or tear them down. But either way we need MORE housing.

well i was working there when they built legacy, the kids seem to really like those, they are just so darn expensive compared to the equivalent accommodations off campus. they need to do something to help the kids who are out there having to pay their own way.

either way im glad they are coming down for whoever is working maintenance nowadays because they were a pain to work in

I actually did time in Stokes. That place was terrible. I will help them blow it up!

it wasn't that bad when I lived there and I do have some fond memories of sneaking a girl in and having wild shower fun in the middle of the night. It was a good thing that our floor supervisor never showed his face. What fond memories

That's why I am suggesting we build more dorms. Both of my kids have stayed in the Conference Center (one is there now). I lived in Voorhies (R.I.P.). I think our dorms where always a bit cramped and run-down compared to other schools' dorms. I stayed in a dorm at LSU my first semester. Also, I visited friends at their dorms in a number different universities (including LA Tech and Northwestern State), and none were as small and depressing as ours. In addition, Tech actually had quite a bit more dorms than us despite having about 2/3 the student body. Like I said, we need to provide more dorms/housing on campus.

I certainly don't have any problem tearing down those awful dorms, but just want to make sure we add new ones. To me, this has been an issue since the early 70's. It has never been properly addressed by the university. In my mind, it is an impediment to the growth of UL both quantitatively and qualitatively.

I had a pretty conscientious RA (resident assistant) when I lived in Voorhies. His name? T-Joe Savoie!

i do get what your saying, and agree that it would be nice to have a surplus of dorm buildings that are at the same time nice to live in, but i know that the housing department cant just up and build buildings when it sees fit, it takes years of politicking and money raising just to build one, and I dont really see it happening any time soon, I think with the demand for legacy style apartments and the amount of money they are getting for those, we will continue to see more and more of those instead of dorm style dwellings.
