An Indy bowl exec said on the radio that if the Cajuns won and ended 6-6, they'd get an invitation due to the locality of the fan base. They want to sell tickets.
Now, that was just radio talk, so don't take too much out of it.
However, a lot of belt fans seem to think that the Indy MUST take a 6-6 belt team over a 6-6 at large team and that is simply not true. The Indy agreement was only for 7+ win belt teams. They can still take any 6-6 school they want as long as there isn't an available 7+ win belt team.
Just read this in everyone's favorite newspaper, the DA:
If UL's football team goes to a bowl game this season, it won't be in New Orleans.
That's what Sun Belt commissioner Wright Waters said during the league's weekly teleconference call.
According to the NCAA postseason football handbook, conferences are required to fill its contracted bowl slots with seven-win teams before six-win teams. The New Orleans Bowl is the Sun Belt's lone guaranteed bowl game, though in July the conference reached secondary agreements with the PapaJohn's.com Bowl in Birmingham, the St. Petersburg Bowl in Florida and PetroSun Independence Bowl in Shreveport.
In that case, Saturday's winner between Troy (7-4 overall, 5-1) and Arkansas State (6-5, 4-2) would advance to the New Orleans Bowl. The loser would be left to compete for an at-large bowl berth.
UL (5-6, 4-2) and Middle Tennessee (5-6, 3-3) play at 6:08 Wednesday night at Cajun Field. The winner becomes bowl eligible and will also fight for an at-large bowl bid.
I'm sure we all knew this, but it seems more official when it comes from the commish.
If Troy wins, and they are the only SBC 7 win team, and they are offered another bowl, are they allowed to forego the NO bowl and accept the other higher paying bowl offer? In that case, wouldn't the SBC HAVE to place a 6-6 SBC team in the NO bowl? How can Wright Waters say that couldn't happen? If Troy happened to be 12-0 and had beaten a couple of ranked teams, wouldn't it be foolish to deny them the opportunity at a much higher paying bowl. This may have been discussed and concluded... and I missed it. Sorry... just remind me.
If we win and the bowls line up --I am sure that if the NO bowl wants UL and the AlaBowl wants Troy and Troy wants them---a swap could be made-A win, win, win, win, every body a happy camper unless NOTWRIGHT screws it up!!!!
As of today 12/1/2008. There are 71 total eligible bowl teams, including 6-6 teams. There are 34 bowls which equals 68 bowl slots.
Louisville can get bowl eligible w/ a win over Rutgers Thurs.
Arizona can get bowl eligible w/ a win over Arizona Sat.
Louisiana or MT can get bowl eligible Wed with a win.
Can someone please answer this:
If there are only 6-6 teams left to fill one of the SBC agreements with the Indy or papajohns bowl, does the bowl have to take a 6-6 SBC team over an at large 6-6 team? YES or NO?
I do agree that they do have to take a 7-5 team, but it looks as if there will be only 6-6 teams left if you do the math for at larges.
Because Wright Waters is who he is I put a lot of weight on what he says. If he said something will happen (a certain way) it probably will.
But, and, however, I do not put a lot of weight on his decision making process, he doesn’t always think things through... In an eerily similar situation to what the Big-12 is going through right now, (Sun Belt 2005) Wright Waters said the #1 criteria for determining the Sun Belt Champion was whether or not they were bowl eligible.
The Sun Belt Champion should be decided separate, apart and completely prior to bowl consideration.

With approx. 13 teams that are 6-6 right now and Louisville, Arizona St., and UL or MT can also get to 6-6, then I would say there is a good chance that there will only be 6-6 teams left, but I haven't looked at all the tie in scenerios.
I do know this:
SEC has 8 non-BCS bowl tie ins.
SEC has 8 Bowl Eligible teams, two of which who are going to go to BCS bowl games. That leaves 6 to fill the 8 slots, which opens up the Indy Bowl and the Papajohns Bowl in which SEC had tie ins. So the Indy Bowl and Papajohns bowl is obligated to take a 6-6 sunbelt team unless there is a 7-5 team out there, but I just don't see it with all the 6-6 teams floating around.
Anyway, its fun to talk about this, and I will feel real bad if we lose wed, and MT or FAU gets an invite, and we stay home.
Geaux Cajuns!!!!
I count 57 teams already with 7 wins, with 3 more possible sitting at 6-5. That would be a maximum of 60 teams with 7 or more wins. That would leave AT LEAST 8 slots open for the 6-6 teams. Depending on how things line up, we should have a good shot at a bowl IF WE WIN on Wed. night.
