I went with a 5, almost 6. My reasoning: he's got two parts to his job. The first part is hiring the right coaches. At that, he's earned a 9 or 10. The second part of his job is the public stuff; glad-handing, fund raising, selling our university to the local and national public and other conferences. At that, he's earned a 1 or 2. I also had to factor in a couple of the public missteps like the handling of softball last year and the delay in creating/unveiling the Master Plan and subsequent funding issues and weigh them against the existence and implementation of the Master Plan. I averaged the scores and came up with the cumulative.
If we went 1-11 in football, what would you be saying to those that blame farmer? He is no more personally responsible for the success just like he wouldn't be personally responsible for teams failure. I personally think it's a stupid question. What farmer does with the most successful athletic year ever is how he should be judged, not what all those coaches and players did in the early freezing morning and scorching hot afternoons to achieve those successes. The coaches are the individual CEO's...they put the process together. Does robe pitch or bat? Does HUD play qb? Does mike? No, but they are the ones with the " business model" not farmer.
then you are looking at it wrong, and im not even a fan of farmers.
if a company's work force goes out and over achieve's they will get praise, and at the same time the ceo will also receive praise. a good A.D. will hire good coaches and then get out of their way and let them do what they do. he can definitely be better in the PR marketing actively getting us out the sunbelt.
its the same thing that an offensive minded head coach does when they hire a def. coordinator, let them do their thing and stay out of their way.
First, this isn't a business and they aren't business minded people. Robe has been here since farmer was still wearing a speedo and a swim cap, mike was here before and David walker lead the hiring of HUD and marlin. I have never been a fan of farmer but I'll give him a chance to prove me wrong going forward. Scott farmer had nothing to do with Brett Baer's kick, nothing to do with Tulane misting the kick, nothing to do with defense at the end if SBC basketball tournament, nothing to do with coming out the losers bracket of a regional. Just like he would have anything to do with it if we lost in all those situations. How he parlays all those successes into moving forward, securing funding and completing the master plan is how he should be judged. Replacing one of these coaches with another successful coach is how he should be judged. It's my ____in opinion , you don't have to agree with it.
He gets a 5 in my book
you're right in the sense that he didnt have anything to do with those things happening, but lets say they dont. take away bowl wins, and tourney appearances, and hosting regionals and softball regionals, he's getting a 5HIT-ton of flack for having those guys in place.
back to the head coach analogy. if we start the year off 4-0 by beating all 4 teams by a score of 3-0, hud is going to get a ton of praise for having us 4-0 over ole miss and boise st. the way you put it is that only that def coor should get credit, because hud's offense didnt do anything to put us in a position to win.
you are right, its actually harder than business. try running a business with absolutely no equity, every year. i mean every year we are in the red. think about that. we are in the red every year and we have to spend a ton of money to keep pace with what everyone else is doing. when that is the case, mistakes are very magnified.
