NEW ORLEANS-Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns women’s basketball’s blues continued as they dropped an 80-65 decision to in-state foe Tulane on Wednesday night at Fogelman Arena.

The loss dropped the Cajuns to 0-5 on the season, while Tulane improved to 2-3 overall.

Once again, Alexis Green led the way for the Cajuns. She posted her fifth consecutive double-digit scoring effort, netting 28 points in the game, including 18 in the first half. Green finished the first half 8-for-11, including 2-for-3 from behind the arc. Green finished the game 12-of-18 with a pair of triples.

Green’s 28 points was the most points in a game by a Cajuns player in the Errol Rogers Era, topping Sonora Edwards (2005-08) team-best 26 points against Centenary on Dec. 1, 2007.

Green scored the most points by a Cajuns’ player since Yolanda Jones (2006-07) had 30 points against Troy on Jan. 21, 2007, and the most points in a road game since Jones posted a 30-point effort at North Texas on Jan. 11, 2007.

Three other Ragin’ Cajuns players finished with double-digit points, as Jasmine Barnes netted 12 points, D’Mya Clay finished with 11 and Mercedes Johnson boasted 10 points.

Green and Clay also pulled down five rebounds apiece to pace the Cajuns.

The two teams started slowly exchanging baskets in the early going. The two teams were tied at 6-6 thanks to a layup by Barnes three minutes into the game. From there, Tulane took the lead with a 10-to-2 pushing the score to 16-8 with 14 minutes to play in the first half.

Green trimmed the score to just three as she connected on a jumper and a triple to cut the deficit to 16-13.

The Green Wave used a second major run in the half to push their lead to 35-17 with a 19-to-4 spurt.

The Cajuns battled back and trimmed the margin to just nine points with just over four minutes to play. Clay began the 11-to-2 run with a layup before Green made the next seven points of the ballgame. A layup by Tulane gave the hosts an 11-point advantage, but Green followed with a midrange jumper to close the gap to single digits once again.

Tulane’s Ashley Langford connected on a triple from the top of the key to put the Green Wave back in front by a dozen. A jumper by Clay closed the margin to just 10, but the Ragin’ Cajuns would get no closer in the first half and go into intermission down 49-34.

The second half was much of the same as UL was unable to cut the Tulane lead to single digits. In the first four and a half minutes of the second stanza, the Cajuns found themselves down 52-40, and by the second media timeout of the half, Louisiana trailed 60-44.

The Cajuns remained within striking distance the entire second half never trailing by more than 20, but could not sustain a significant run to close the gap to fall by a final score of 80-65.

The Ragin’ Cajuns women’s basketball team will return to action on Friday afternoon as they play host to Mississippi State at historic Earl K. Long Gym in a game that is set to begin at 2 p.m.
