BATON ROUGE — Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes have the highest rates of youth-related gambling in all of Louisiana, says a newly released study, which also places them among the top six parishes for numbers of video-gaming sites in operation.

The study, conducted by the Picard Center for Child Development at the University of Louisiana, compares and contrasts gambling activities throughout the state.

Its findings include statistics based on several types of surveys that indicate up to 50 percent of Houma-Thibodaux students in grades six, eight, 10 and 12 have engaged in some form of gambling.

I always find it interesting how people in the statistically lowest income areas, manage to find so much disposable income for necessities like gambling. I'm just happy those same people make sure to instill those same positive values in their children.

The interesting thing to me is that someone needed to do a study to determine a large percentage of teenagers gamble. I cut my teeth playing bourre in back rooms, drinking to much, smoking, driving too fast, and chasing any girl who stood still for 5 secs...the teenage years for most males is little more than a time to do things we shouldn't and it's worst now than it was then. It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that gambling would be a problem for today's teenagers. When I think back to the stuff I pulled, I am only surprised that I survived those years.

You hit the nail on the head. It isn't the pimple... it's the sweets and a strong appetite for them. Whatever sweets we old people like... rest assured... teenagers will see if it's possible to choke on them. Rule: If society does it x times... teenagers will do it x to the power of x. Who owns the magnitude of x?
