Thread: COLUMN: Can't call JSU win an upset

  1. Default COLUMN: Can't call JSU win an upset

The Tigers beat them, they edged them, they nipped them, they surprised them. But the Tigers did not upset the Ragin' Cajuns — not if you're using the sports form of the word "upset." Here's the dictionary definition of that kind of upset ...

I stopped reading when he misspelled "happens too often".

Wow. Is this an example of the kind of love JSU gets? It was an amazing win that meets the definition of upset provided by the author. They did everything right that day. Masterful pitching, and great coaching decisions. Give them credit instead of writing this crap to help MSU save face.

I kind of get where he is coming from. I would prefer an upset in baseball to be defined as winning the regional or even just taking 2 of 3 from a better team during the season. If JSU would have knocked us out of the tournament, it would be one thing, but winning one game in the regional is not really that impressive. They ultimately went 1-2. Nothing to write home about.

Nailed it about MSU. JSU surely cant beat a team MSU couldn't beat.

But the fact is he's right. Baseball their is a much higher chance underdog can win.

I don't care how often it happens year to year, UL's record alone makes it an upset.

But that is why baseball is not a 1-game championship like football or a single-elimination tournament like basketball. An upset would be JSU playing this weekend and us, MSU and SDSU sitting at home.

Do you consider any of the other 7 losses upsets? The 3 conference losses when we won the regular season by 7 games and the tournament going undefeated? Not trying to be a smartass. Honest question.

Well the team sure believes it was an upset. I'm in Vicksburg during the week most of the time and I get Jackson stations. They did a piece on them when they got back from the regional and they winning that game was the biggest highlight. One of the players even said it was so big that people will be talking about it for the next 5 to 10 years.

The UNO loss was an upset.

I guess I agree on that one. I just don't see JSU beating us then losing 2 straight, including one to us, as an upset. A midweek game can be considered an upset. JSU won a game but is ultimately sitting at home while we move on.

their first post season win, and the first time they shut out an opponent in like 33 years. that is an upset, and they are defnitely hanging their hat on in

I see how tournament settings change the skew for some. It seems to me, if they had kept winning, the first loss would have been less of an upset.

It's the fact that they were who we thought they were that makes the loss a fluke, and thus an upset.
