Android TV, a new streaming platform that's set to rival the likes of Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Roku, is rumoured to be in the works at Google. But when is Android TV coming out and what will Android TV be like? We bring you everything there currently is to know about Android TV in this article.
Android TV features: What is Android TV?
The four-year-old Google TV has been deemed a flop, but that doesn't mean that Google has given up on the idea. In fact, the recent introduction of Chromecast, which seems to have been a success so far, proves just that. But apparently, Google has even more up its sleeve, in the form of Android TV.
In April, The Verge reported that Android TV is Google's upcoming assault on the living room, that'll take on competitors such as the Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Roku players. Similar to those devices, Android TV will display content with Google Now style cards and will make recommendations. See: Google Chromecast vs Roku Streaming Stick
According to The Verge, Google has said: "Android TV is an entertainment interface, not a computing platform. It's all about finding and enjoying content with the least amount of friction." It will be "cinematic, fun, fluid and fast," apparently.
It's allegedly being designed to be simple, with an interface that consists of a series of scrolling "cards" for movies, TV shows, apps and games. You'll use a remote control with a four-way directional pad to navigate through those cards. That remote control will also have Enter, Home and Back buttons.
If you think you'll be playing games on the Android TV, Google will purportedly be offering optional game controllers.
Other rumoured features for Android TV are voice input and notifications, though apparently Google is trying to get developers to steer away from using them. Intelligent search has been talked about too.
Android TV will also present you with recommendations, and will offer you the ability to pick up watching something you've been viewing on your phone or tablet directly on the TV, rumours suggest.
Google is also said to be aiming to ensure that it will never take more than three clicks to get from the home screen to a piece of content. "Access to content should be simple and magical," Google said, according to the report.
Apps expected to be available on Android TV include the Google Play Store, Movies & TV, Music, YouTube, Hangouts, Hulu, Netflix, Songza, Pandora and Vevo, though those are likely to differ depending on your region.
Android TV release date: When is Android TV coming out?
The Verge has suggested that Android TV is "about to launch," and that Google is currently in talks with developers the apps it wants to include on the platform.
It's quite possible that Google will introduce the new platform at its Google I/O event, which takes place at the end of June, and GigaOm on 30 May reported that sources had confirmed Google I/O as the launch event for Android TV.
