Thread: Sluggish start for UL hoops

  1. UL Basketball Sluggish start for UL hoops

With the UL football team mired in a two-game slump, Ragin' Cajun fans needed something to cheer about Saturday.

And for the better part of 38 minutes, the UL basketball team provided that.

But Louisiana Tech forward Magnum Rolle scored six straight points during a one minute stretch to help the Bulldogs rally from seven points down to pull out a 61-59 win over the Ragin' Cajuns in the season opener for both teams.

The Cajuns led 55-48 on La'Ryan Gary's two free throws late in the game, but the Cajuns then went cold, and Tech guard Jamel Guyton took over.

I have never heard of going into a Stall game with over 2 min in the game and only a 2 point lead.. Holy Moly ! Bad decision ! that is the time where you need to take high % shots, not last second desperation ones..
Come on Coach Lee, use your head.

With Louisiana Tech staying in that zone, I think they should have taken Tyren Johnson out and put in Corey Bloom in the last 4 minutes of the game. It would have given them another 3 point shooter.

Game was lost on four fronts:
    1. Limited play by Dison. He controlled Tech's main shooter when he was in. Injury reduced his minutes. Cost us. Lago covered him a bit better than Mc.
    2. Poor shooting in first half allowed Tech to stay close. our defense was good; Tech was missing and we missed too many layups, put backs and open shots.
3, Too often we hurried 3 point shots in 2nd half rather than taking more time off clock. BUT, I don't mean waiting for the Coach Lee special play with 10 seconds left. See below.
    3. In last four minutes, I believe Coach should have played Lago in lieu of McCoy. McCoy is developing but he made poor choices in driving to basket, passing and not seeing open players. Lago had a better grasp of the game.

Bright spots. Barr played stronger. Wished he didn't put ball on floor so much but you can see he can be a force inside. Defense was good. FT shooting not too bad. In fact, helped us out as Tech missed a number. Bureau played well. Worked at took a great shot at end that could have won but it rang out. Gave us a chance to win when it looked like there was no recovery.

Overall, Tech's poor play and our poor play led to a close game. I think our defense helped them play a bit poorer. Not too sure why we did.

And if Coach Lee draws up one more 10 second play, I'm leaving the arena. They may be great plays, but the team never follows them or the other team has them well defended. Why not just pass until you see an opening for a good shot - like we should be doing all along.

Disappointing result on a disappointing weekend.

In terms of McCoy, you have to remember that he sat out last season, so he's been away from competitive ball for one year.

The Cajuns were and still are ravaged by injuries. Dison will see more time as he gets healthy. McCoy will play better as he shakes off some rust. Barr will play more if he can stay out of foul trouble.

Overall I was pleased with the whole game. I would like a point guard who can run an offense, is smart with the ball, and gets his teammates involved. Are we recruiting Warren Fusilier from Northside?? He was the best point guard in the state his senior year. He is currently playing at Juco in Los Angeles.

If only the second half was 18:00 minutes. I'm still pretty PO'd about it. taking bad shots, bad coaching, playing the last 1:30 not to lose which never works, etc.......

I believe you're going to see that with McCoy as he gets more comfortable. As was stated above, he has been out for an entire year. It will take a bit for him to get in his groove. I've seen some flashes out of him where I could easily see him being a very good PG.

Out of high school, McCoy signed with Tulsa. He ended up going JUCO because of grades.

He's talented. But you're going to have to give him time to adjust to a new team, new teammates and new coaches.

Having Daigle out will give the Cajuns a chance to develop even more PG depth with McCoy and Lago seeing so much playing time. Roberson will also help with the ball-handling when he becomes eligible in mid-December.
