UL golf coach Theo Sliman opened his recruiting for the 2009-10 season in a big way Thursday, signing St. Thomas More standout Ethan Savoy to the Ragin' Cajun squad.

Savoy, a two-time top-five finisher in the state high school championships including winning the individual Class 4A title as a sophomore, became Sliman's first signee since he took over the program last summer.

"He's the best high school prospect in the state," Sliman said. "His all-around game is as solid as it gets at his age."

UL - Head Louisiana golf coach Theo Sliman signed his first recruit in his tenure and made it count, as he signed Ethan Savoy, the No. 1 ranked golfer in Louisiana, to a National Letter of Intent.

“We are very lucky to sign a player that is the caliber of Ethan,” Sliman stated of his first collegiate signee. “Living in the Acadiana area, I have watched Ethan grow as a junior golfer and I look forward to watching him grow and mature as a collegiate golfer.

“I think it is a testament to the golf program that we can bring in the No. 1 recruit in the state. UL golf has always prided itself on recruiting and developing local talent and Ethan is just another in the long line of exceptional golfers in the area.”

Savoy brings an impressive resume to the Cajuns’ golf team. He boasts a 0.4 USGA Handicap Index. Savoy averages 280 yards off the drive and hits an average of 16 greens in regulation. He is solid on the green, averaging just 30 putts per round.
