Respectfully, I am a little curious as to why y'all insist on being called "Louisiana" for sports. Your University really doesn't represent the entire state... in fact, (if your honest) you really don't want to. Besides New Orleans, y'all often look down on NW La, NE La, CENLA, BTR. The only area that y'all really care about is Acadiana, so why isn't that reflected in the name of your Institution/sports? The University of Acadiana would be much more unique than just "Louisiana" & there would be no more name controversy, especially with the sports media.
BlueDawg, you are so right. We should know our place and never try to strive for better. j\a

We are also, officially, designated as a 'Statewide' university. We have higher admission standards, and as previously stated, are the second largest in the State.
LaTech and UNO are also 'Statewide,' but UNO has never recovered from Katrina, etc., and seems to be having quite the struggle to survive (their current enrollement is ~7K, less than half of what it used to be). LaTech is good academically, but it is in a far-flung part of the state, and half the size of UL.
All the other Uni's are deemed 'Regional.'

Good old Necks. Always trying to look out for our best interests. We'll go with that when you change to Ruston Polytechnical. Or you could go with ULM-Ruston. That would be unique and then there would be that flagship of North Louisiana controversy.

Thanks BaldDawg. She's always got all of the attention wherever we go. All of the girls at the Vet School here at MSU come out en masse when we're in the waiting room...it's amazing. Yes...They're smart...so smart it's a little scary!

I'll never have another dog, but if I did, it'd be a Lousiana Catahoula. No doubt.

Back on topic, good game last night Cajuns! The dog was happy (that's her team), but Papa was not sleeping well after that butt-whipping! Such is baseball...hey, whomever wins the Championship tonight deserves it, that's for sure.

Maybe if UL had a larger enrollment than Ellis Shoe, they wouldnt be so butthurt about the name?

Never happen. Didn't you hear about that whole congressional "flagship" thing. Don't want any upstarts horning in on the limelight.

Obviously you're trying to turn this thread into a flamer's rant. I guess researching the topic take a little too much effort.

There is a lot that has happened over that last 30 years concerning the name and the significance of changing it. First off, we are second to LSU in enrollment. Is that big enough for you?

The history of the name, the short version:

USL was officially changed to UL back in 1984. Because of District Judge William H. Brown (a bias judge and LSU graduate) the name was changed back after one year. The point is that LSU doesn't want competition within the state in anything and we actually pose a threat. Because of all this our backwards minded Legislature passed the "LSU Rule" in 1995 which required that at least two state universities change their name at the same time using the (at city) designation. This in effects makes LSU the only "Flagship" school.

Most states have two systems with each system a Flagship school. The Flagship school is normally the largest of it's respective system. The fact is that WE ARE NOT IN LSU's SYSTEM.

The point is that we should be the flagship of our University Louisiana system and we are excelling in many areas besides enrollment and sports here are just a few recent recognitions:

"Best 378 Colleges" 2014, The Princeton Review
No. 4 in the U.S. for Social Mobility, 2013 Washington Monthly
"Best 295 Business Schools" 2014, The Princeton Review
"Best Colleges 2014," top 281 national universities (tier 2), U.S. News & World Report college rankings
"2013 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll."
No. 10 among research universities for percentage of research and development expenditures funded by business, National Science Foundation September 2013 Report.

    We are LOUISIANA.

I haven't been against the Acadiana idea. However, it's funny how you try to tell us we have nothing to do with how people view Louisiana. I tell you what, we'll go with whatever name you think we should go with as soon as you guys change your name to Ruston Tech. Because Ruston is in no way what the rest of Louisiana is.

UNO was almost bankrupt so LSU dumped them off on the UL system that has a much better record of finacial stability! They also have been trying to pawn off LSUE, LSUA and LSUS to the UL system and take LaTech because of their Nano Tech Research. You see they dump the burden on the UL system and take the coveted Nano Tech Research being done at Louisiana Tech, I dont think Tech will bite as the second they do LSU will take claim to that Research and Tech's Dawg Jaws will be open wide draging the ground!

Where is Tulane in all this? Louisiana is also getting ready to bump up to the same Tier as LSU, and La Tech as Tulane is the only Tier 1 National Research Institution in the state!
