Just an FYI veedreen, but we still had an identification problem when we were called USL. I did a lot of traveling back in the mid 80's with the football and basketball teams. The majority of the fans of the teams we were playing did not know who we were. We were often called the University of Southwest LA (not too bad), the University of Southern LA (I hated that one) or the University of Saint Louis (Really, did these people not have a clue to what state we were from nor care?). There were a few others, but that was the most mis-used names I remember.
We have to keep putting the name we want out there. We have to keep winning and reminding others what we should be and want to be called. We have to keep fighting the legislature. Keep pounding the name down everyone's throat; WE ARE LOUISIANA!!!!
GEAUX CAJUNS!!!
I just know this on ESPN they can UL-Lafayette us to death, but I see Louisiana everywhere, scoreboard, jerseys, helmets, pants, hats, behind home plate, in the outfield, on the press box, and on the fans.
So ESPN you go ahead say Lafayette, but when I watch a game I see Louisiana. I automatically think University of Louisiana. People are seeing it, ESPN is seeing it, they know exactly who we are. Everyone else who is watching knows who we are also! We are Louisiana, we are UL, thee University of Louisiana Ragin Cajuns
It would not surprise me if ESPN tells those announcers " never use Louisiana you can say Louisiana-Lafayette or Lafayette, but if you start using Louisiana they will be consequences."
Wouldn't surprise me one bit. They probably dropping the hammer down on the ESPN regional announcer as we speak.
Hey Cajuns, CONGRATS on games yesterday. Hope y'all send state back to StarkVegas in a blowout.
Respectfully, I am a little curious as to why y'all insist on being called "Louisiana" for sports. Your University really doesn't represent the entire state... in fact, (if your honest) you really don't want to. Besides New Orleans, y'all often look down on NW La, NE La, CENLA, BTR. The only area that y'all really care about is Acadiana, so why isn't that reflected in the name of your Institution/sports? The University of Acadiana would be much more unique than just "Louisiana" & there would be no more name controversy, especially with the sports media.
As the second largest universty of the state and largest member in the UL school system it seems rightfully ours
..
Lil doggie you have been on here enough to understand EVERY point about the name---Its history, its struggle, and the determination of the Cajun people to get the thing that was taken away from us----Do you want to go back to LPI (LouisiaNA POLYTECHNICAL INSTITUTE ) OR WHATEVER THE THE NAME WAS BEFORE THE PRESENT ONE????
To your point...if you go to someone from Montana and ask them about Louisiana...odds are very high they will make reference to either New Orleans or Cajun Heritage. They won't speak about Lake Charles, Shreveport, Ruston, Monroe, Alexandria, or even Baton Rouge. To be honest...we deserve to be the University of Louisiana because...we kind of are. Acadiana is one of the most recognizable pieces of Louisiana next to New Orleans.
We look down on the rest of the state because it is unable to be distinguished from the surrounding states. If you don't think you are in East Texas when you drive through Lake Charles you are fooling yourself. We are unique...but it's that uniqueness that people outside of Louisiana associate heavily with Louisiana.
