The Phillies agreed Monday to a Minor League contract with catcher Paul Bako, while infielder Miguel Cairo accepted a Minor League assignment.

Bako, 36, will report to extended Spring Training in Clearwater, Fla.

Cairo, who the Phillies designated for assignment after Friday's victory against Washington, is expected to play for Triple-A Lehigh Valley, but it is uncertain when he will report.

"Paul has a tremendous amount of Major League experience and he gives us the opportunity to add greater catching depth to our system," Phillies assistant general manager Scott Proefrock said in a statement.

The Cubs released Bako on March 30, and he has not played since. Once Bako gets into game shape, he is expected to join one of the organization's Minor League affiliates.

Bako has hit .231 with 21 home runs and 186 runs batted in his 11-year career. In reserve roles with Kansas City, Baltimore and Cincinnati the past three seasons, Bako has not hit better than .217. He has thrown out 28 percent of potential base stealers (155-of-549).

UL Baseball Bako back in the Big Leagues

The Philadelphia Phillies recently bought his contract from a AA minor league team and added Bako to their active roster to replace Brad Lidge who was sent to the 15 day DL. They now have three catchers on their active roster, so I'm not sure how long this arrangement will last. However, it's nice to see the former LHS and UL player get another shot in MLB. Unlike his last two teams (Orioles & Reds), the Phillies are actually a legit contender. In last night's game with the Mets, he struck out in his lone plate appearance.

Glad to see him lasting so long. He's 36 now. It takes catchers so long to get up to the bigs and its really good to see him staying there as long as he has.

i was watching the mets last night when charlie manuel, phillies' mgr., put bako in to pinch hit in the late innings of 4-4 game. he struck out, but at least he's around pinch-hitting, and pinch-catching for somebody.

  9. Default Raging Paging: Bako the elite slugger

Paul Bako became the 32nd player in major league history to homer for at least eight different teams when he connected for a solo homer in the Phillies' 3-1 win over Colorado Thursday. He has the fewest homers, 22, among the group of 32, which includes Gary Sheffield and Bobby Bonds. Link

Baseball's unwritten rules have changed Bako wishes it was liek the old days. Link

Quarterback Jake Delhomme participated in six plays before making a quick exit in Carolina's first exhibition Link

Jonathan Lucroy has extended his hitting streak to nine games.

Ike Taylor is the unquestioned leader of the Steelers corners and will be counted on to go against every opponent's best receiver, usually in man-to-man situations. The seven-year veteran is more than up to the task. Link

  10. UL Baseball Bako 'blessed' by experiences in Major Leagues

Don't get him wrong, Paul Bako still loves baseball.

He fully understands everything the sport has meant to him throughout his life.

    The rest of the story
