Extremely correct. Most SEC schools are in smaller and/or more boring towns. He said something dumb. He used this explanation as a wiggle out. I give him credit for finding some wiggle room. Unfortunately, he said it to an audience that doesn't get or care to have it explained.
One SEC team (Vanderbilt) is in pro-sports towns. Most are in cities similar +/- 50,000 to Lafayette metro area in size or smaller. College Station/Fayetteville/Gainesville/Tuscaloosa/Oxford/Starkville/Auburn/ Red Stick /Athens/Knoxville/Lexington.......some are slightly bigger, some smaller but nothing major in actual size difference.
