Not so much old news. At least now we know who has first, second, and third choice. That was not reported in prior press releases.

    Release: 11/03/08

Sun Belt Conference Enters Agreements with St. Petersburg Bowl, PapaJohns.com Bowl, and Independence Bowl

The Sun Belt Conference has signed agreements with the St. Petersburg Bowl, the PapaJohns.com Bowl and the Independence Bowl, which are effective immediately and will impact the 2008 and 2009 bowl games. Bowl-eligible teams from the Sun Belt Conference will be the first available teams in these bowls should the contracted parties not be able to fulfill their requirements. While the Sun Belt Conference champion will still play in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, the St. Petersburg Bowl or the PapaJohns.com Bowl will have second choice to select one of the Sun Belt’s bowl-eligible teams if the contracted parties are not be able to fulfill their requirements. The agreement signed with the PetroSun Independence Bowl calls for that bowl game to receive the third choice to select one of the Sun Belt’s bowl eligible teams if the contracted parties are not able to fulfill their requirements. The Independence Bowl would also receive the second choice to select a Sun Belt bowl eligible team should the St. Petersburg Bowl or the PapaJohns.com Bowl not have an opening.

well, it looks like this year we'll BOTH be going to a bowl, regardless of who wins our match-up. can't deny I want New Orleans, but i'd be happy with Birmingham.

    Bowl Ties and predictions

    New Orleans Bowl
    Dec. 21, 2008
    Marshall (C-USA) vs. Louisiana(Sun Belt No. 1)

Last week’s victory over Houston puts 4-4 Marshall back in bowl contention. Louisiana has quietly moved to the top of the Sun Belt standings, though a big game awaits Nov. 22 at Troy.

    PapaJohns.com Bowl
    Dec. 29, 2008
    At Birmingham, Ala.
(SEC) vs. South Florida (Big East) (Big East)

The Papajohns Bowl ditched C-USA for the SEC this year, but it will have to settle the Sun Belt now that it appears the SEC won’t have enough bowl-eligible teams. After a 5-0 start, the Bulls have lost three of their past four.

    St. Petersburg Bowl
    Dec. 20, 2008
    At St. Petersburg, Fla.
    Connecticut(Big East) vs. Memphis (C-USA)

After a 5-0 start, the Huskies have lost three of their past four and are fortunate they’re already bowl eligible. The Tigers need to win two of their final three for bowl eligibility, but their opponents have a combined record of 5-20.

    Independence Bowl
    Dec. 28, 2008
    At Shreveport, La.
Arkansas(SEC) vs. Kansas State (Big 12)

The Razorbacks kept their bowl hopes alive by upsetting Tulsa, but they still need another upset against South Carolina or LSU to be bowl eligible. Kansas State can become bowl eligible if they beat both Nebraska and Iowa State at home.

    1. St. Petersburg bowl on Dec. 20th matching Big East and CUSA
    2. Pappa Johns bowl on Dec. 29th matching Big East vs. SEC
    3. Independence bowl on Dec. 28th matching the SEC vs. Big XII

We need to pull for teams from the above conferences to get an at large BCS game or to not fulfill their bowl tie-ins.

    Here is the breakdown
    1. CUSA has 6 tie-ins this is nuts for a conference this weak
    2. Big XII has 7 + 2. The plus 2 is optional between Big XII, Big East, and ND
    3. SEC has 9 tie-ins.
    4. Big East has 5 + 2. The plus 2 is again optional see above.

Right now it looks like the Big XII may get all 9 teams in. The SEC may get all 9 but right now they only have 8 teams with winning records. The Big East looks to get 6 teams in.

Right now out best shot is St. Petersburg bowl.

    Geaux Cajuns keep winning. _
    As of Nov. 9th

The SEC has 6 bowl eligible teams in (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Kentucky, & So. Carolina), and most likely Ole Miss will get eligible with a win over ULM next week. This leaves 2 bowl spots open and there is only 1 possible team that can still get bowl eligible in my opinion and that is Vandy, and Vandy may not do it, they need 1 win in their last 3 games which include @ Kentucky, Tennessee, and @ Wake Forest. Auburn and Arkansas have a statistical chance but will most likely not get to 6 wins. This will leave either 1 or 2 bowl games open for a Sun Belt team.

The Big XII already has 7 teams bowl eligible to fill all of their guarantee bowl tie-ins. The Big XII has 2 partial bowl tie-ins and there are 3 teams with a statistical chance to get bowl eligible and they are Colorado who needs either a win against Okla St. or @ Nebraska, Kansas St. who needs 2 wins against Nebraska and Iowa St., and Tex A&M who needs 2 wins against @ Texas and @ Baylor. This may leave 2 bowls open but they can be filled by Notre Dame or a school from the Big East first. Notre Dame needs just one win either against Navy, Syracuse, or USC so they should grab one of those spots and the Big East will most likely grab the other. So I don't see a Big XII bowl being open.

The Big 8 already has 5 teams to fill there guarantee bowl games (Pitt, Cincy, West Virginia, UConn, and So. Florida) and may get 1 or 2 more (Louisville and/or Rutgers) teams to 6 wins to help fill the 2 bowl games that they have partial tie-ins with the Big XII and Notre Dame. So I don't see a Big 8 bowl being open.

CUSA only has 3 teams bowl eligible at this time (Tulsa, East Carolina, and Rice) but has 5 teams that can still get bowl eligible (UTEP, So. Miss, Houston, Memphis, & Marshall). Memphis has the easiest chance because they are 5-5 with an easy schedule left, the rest has to win 2/3 so some will and some won't. I think CUSA will end up filling up all 6 bowl tie-in spots so I don't expect this to open up but there is a decent chance 1 will open.

In conclusion the Sun Belt 2nd place will most likely end up in the Independence bowl. The St. Petersburg bowl may open up first if CUSA don't fill all their slots.

Like many teams in the country I think the Cajuns need to win 2/3 games left to make a bowl game. Winning 2/3 means we either eliminate Fla Atl. from catching us and grabbing 2nd place (which right now I am scared of ) or we hold off Troy and win the SBC. If Fla Atl. losses another game somewhere we should do no worse than 2nd place in conference by winning 1/3 games left with a 5-2 record because of head up tie-breakers with Ark St. or FIU. This should get us bowling also.

Other than this statement, it was a very good post.

Papajohns opens up before the Independence if the SEC only has eight bowl eliglble teams. The Sun Belt must fill the papajohns slot first.

CUSA will diss the Houston Bowl and the New Orleans bowl before they diss the St. Pete. That bowl is owned by ESPN.
