Scouting the Opposition
The University of Connecticut softball team was picked fifth in the preseason coaches’ poll released by the BIG EAST Conference. The Huskies finished 28-22 last season, including a 13-7 record in the conference, which was good enough for third place.
Kentucky had an impressive start to its season last week at the Desert Classic hosted by UNLV. UK opened its 12th season of softball with an 11-9 win over Oregon. The Wildcats followed that with an 8-0 five-inning shutout over Hawaii. Kentucky capped off the weekend with a 7-1 win over UNLV.
San Diego State enters the weekend after playing a pair of tournaments. The Mardi Gras Invitational will mark the first trip outside of the state of California for the Aztecs. San Diego State enters the weekend with a 4-5 record with four of their five losses coming at the hands of ranked opponents.
UL - Connecticut was making its season debut in Friday's Mardi Gras Invitational.
And the UL Ragin' Cajuns were considerate hosts, giving the Huskies a few extra innings of work.
But in the 10th inning of Friday's third game, the Lady Cajuns exploded for five runs, capped off by a grand slam by Melissa Verde to rally past the Huskies 9-4.

The UL Ragin' Cajun softball team likes to give the fans their money's worth.
After playing a 10-inning marathon game against Connecticut in their first game of the Mardi Gras Invitational, the Cajuns turned around and played a nine-inning affair with the Kentucky Wildcats.
The Lady Cajuns won both extra-inning contests and upped their record to 8-2 on the year as the Mardi Gras Invitational kicked off and played well into the night.

Ashley Brignac wasn't at her best on Saturday.
And that doesn't bode well for future UL opponents.
Brignac tossed the fourth no-hitter of her career and struck out eight batters as the Cajuns blanked the San Diego State Aztecs 1-0 in the first game of Saturday's Mardi Gras Invitational at Alfred and Helen Lamson Park.
"It feels good to be back out there," Brignac said. "Everything is feeling good, being out there with my teammates. We're going to fight every pitch, and that's what we did."

The UL softball team is not a group of violent girls.
But given the chance, they'll slap you silly.
"I kind of like the new t-shirt that's hanging in the souvenir shop that says 'Don't make me slap you,'" UL coach Stefni Lotief said.

Coaches can't plan adversity, but it's always nice to experience it early in the season.
The UL softball coaches didn't plan on playing 19 innings on Friday before turning around and playing the early game on Saturday and having their late game with Kentucky rained out in the third inning.
But it happened nonetheless and the Cajuns (10-2) survived the test unscathed as they wrapped up the three-day Mardi Gras Invitational with a 5-0 win over San Diego State on Sunday at Alfred and Helen Lamson Park to finish the weekend with a perfect 4-0 record.
