  1. UL Softball Ragin’ Cajuns Softball Opens LA Classics with Win

UL - Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns softball team scored four runs on eight hits and won their first game of the 23rd Annual Louisiana Classics, 4-2, against Lipscomb on Friday night at Alfred and Helen Lamson Ragin’ Cajuns Softball Park.

The Lady Cajuns tallied four runs on eight hits, including four extra base hits.

Melissa Verde and Gabriele Bridges both connected on home runs for Louisiana, while Vallie Gaspard finished the game with a pair of doubles.

Offensively, The Lady Cajuns were led by Karli Hubbard and Gaspard. The duo both finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Bridges and Verde both made their only hits of the night count as they blasted solo home runs. Verde added a sacrifice fly to lead The Lady Cajuns with a pair of RBI.

Once again, UL received a solid pitching effort in the circle. Starting pitcher Brittany Cuevas, who improved to 1-1 on the year, scattered four hits in 5.0 innings. She did not allow an extra base hit in the game. Cuevas surrendered a pair of runs, while striking out two batters.

Cuevas was relieved in the sixth inning by Donna Bourgeois. The sophomore hurler worked 2.0 innings surrendering a hit and a walk. Bourgeois recorded her first save of the season and the third of her career.

The Ragin’ Cajuns broke the scoreless tie in the second inning. Hubbard got things started for UL with a bunt single down the first base line. She moved into scoring position with her third steal of the young season. Hubbard came home on an RBI double by Gaspard. The double was the slapper’s fifth career two-bagger.

Louisiana added a run in the third inning as Verde collected the first home run of the season for The Lady Cajuns. Verde blasted a solo home run off of the scoreboard in right center field to increase the UL lead to 2-0.

The home run was the first of the season for UL and snapped a 29-inning homerless drought.

The Lady Cajuns plated another run in the top of the fourth inning. Jessica Dupont led off the inning with a single up the middle and Erikka Murphy entered the game to run for Dupont. Gaspard’s second double of the game gave The Lady Cajuns runners on second and third with no outs. A fielder’s choice retired the lead runner, but left The Lady Cajuns with runners on the corners. Katie Smith stole her team-leading fifth base of the season to give UL a pair of runners in scoring position. A sacrifice fly by Verde scored Gaspard from third and gave Louisiana a 3-0 edge.

In the fifth inning, Louisiana added one more run. Bridges connected on her first home run of the season. The bomb landed about 12 rows deep in the bleachers in left field. The home run was the 12th of Bridges’ career.

The Lady Bison scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning, but The Lady Cajuns held off the late charge and secured the 4-2 victory.

The Ragin’ Cajuns continue play at the Louisiana Classics tournament with a pair of games on Saturday. The Lady Cajuns game with Louisiana Tech at 11:30 a.m. will be televised on My KLAF. UL will take on Providence in a late game at 4:30 p.m.

  2. UL Softball Day 1 win for The Lady Cajuns

There wasn't any contest going on in the UL clubhouse, but Melissa Verde certainly didn't mind being first.

Verde became the first Ragin' Cajun to leave the yard this season, even though her ball didn't technically leave the ballpark.

The third baseman blasted a solo homer off the scoreboard in right field in the third inning to help ignite a 4-2 UL win over the Lipscomb Lady Bison on Friday night in opening round play of the Louisiana Classics.

  4. UL Softball

The B's are buzzing and the UL offense is getting into a groove.

And that didn't bode well for the Lady Cajuns' two opponents on Saturday in the 23rd annual Louisiana Classics Tournament.

Ashley Brignac's season debut was shortened by a 40-minute lightning delay, but the sophomore standout still managed five strikeouts in two innings of work before the inclement weather halted the game in the third inning.

  5. UL Softball Rain, Friars Can’t Stop No. 19 Ragin’ Cajuns

UL - Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns softball team collected 11 hits, including six extra base hits, as they downed Providence, 13-2, at the 23rd Annual Louisiana Classics Softball Tournament at Lamson Park on Friday night.

The Lady Cajuns battled a 40-minute rain delay, but did not let the weather dampen their night as they cruised to an 11-run victory.

Louisiana’s offense saw three players collect multiple hits on the night. Gabriele Bridges finished the night 3-for-4 with two home runs, including a grand slam and six RBI. The two home runs and six runs batted in tied career highs for the sophomore power hitter.

Melissa Verde and Karli Hubbard continued their excellent play in the Louisiana Classics Tournament. Verde finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored, three RBI and a double, while Hubbard went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI.

Codi Runyan belted her first home run of the season, while Ashley Ray collected her first collegiate hit – a double. Runyan finished the night 1-for-3 with three RBI.

Lana Bowers and Katie Smith each drew three free passes each and Smith tied Bridges with three runs scored.

In the circle, Donna Bourgeois picked up her third win of the year. The sophomore worked 3.0 innings of relief, striking out six batters and surrendering one walk. Bourgeois did not allow a hit on the night.

Bourgeois entered the game in relief of starting pitcher Ashley Brignac. Brignac, pitching in her first game of the season, worked 2.0 innings. She surrendered a pair of runs on two hits. She fanned five batters and issued just one walk. Brignac’s night ended as weather caused a 40-minute delay in play.

Brittany Cuevas and Amanda Hill each worked a scoreless inning of relief each.

The Lady Cajuns wasted little time scratching the scoreboard, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Smith led off the game with a walk and moved into scoring position with her eighth steal of the season. Hubbard laid down a bunt single to give The Lady Cajuns runners on the corners. Verde cleared the bases with one swing as she doubled to right field to give UL a 2-0 advantage. Bridges followed with a two-run homer to straight away center field to give Louisiana a 4-0 cushion after a half inning of play.

Louisiana added a run in the top of the second inning. Smith led off the inning with her second walk of the game. A sacrifice bunt advanced Smith to second base and an RBI single up the middle by Verde made the score 5-0 after one and a half innings of play.

The Friars used a pair of solo home runs to trim The Lady Cajuns lead to just 5-2. After surrendering a leadoff home run, Brignac responded with back-to-back strikeouts. A second home run pulled Providence to within three runs, but a third strikeout ended the inning and the Friars rally.

The Lady Cajuns withstood a 40-minute weather delay before resuming play. Play was halted in the bottom of the third inning and the delay lasted from 5:16 until 5:56.

Bourgeois entered the game following the weather delay. She sophomore fanned four of the first six batters she faced.

The Lady Cajuns scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning thanks to Runyan’s three-run shot to left field. Bridges’ first collegiate grand slam provided four of the five runs UL scored in the seventh inning.

The Ragin’ Cajuns will conclude play in the Louisiana Classics Tournament with a pair of games on Sunday afternoon. The Lady Cajuns square off with Nicholls State at 12:30 p.m. before taking on McNeese State in the tournament finale at 5:30 p.m.
