  1. UL Softball Brignac, Lady Cajuns Blank Tulsa, 6-0

UL - Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns softball team collected their second shutout in the last three days as they defeated Tulsa, 6-0, on Tuesday night at Alfred and Helen Lamson Ragin’ Cajuns Softball Park.

Ashley Brignac tossed the complete-game shutout against the Golden Tornados. Brignac has thrown three consecutive shutouts and has not allowed an earned run in her last five starts and six appearances. Brignac has not allowed an earned run in 36.1 innings of work in the circle. The sophomore fanned seven batters and did not allow a walk in the game. She scattered just three hits over seven innings of work, but did not allow an extra base hit in the game.

Louisiana collected nine hits as a team, including a pair of hits from both Vallie Gaspard and Erikka Murphy. Five other Ragin’ Cajuns players collected hits in the game, including Gabriele Bridges and Christi Orgeron who had a home run and a double, respectively. For Bridges, the home run was the sophomore’s seventh homer of the season and her second in the last three games.

Codi Runyan drove in a team-high two runs on the day. Runyan finished the game 1-for-2 with a sacrifice fly and a walk. The Cajuns had five additional players drive in a run and a total of six players score in the game.

The Cajuns broke the scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Bridges started off the inning with a home run to center field. Lana Bowers followed with a walk and Gaspard slapped the ball straight into the ground for an infield single. Murphy followed with a single to second base to load the bases for the Cajuns. A slap single back to the pitcher from Katie Smith scored Bowers from third. A fielder’s choice recorded the second out, but Runyan walked with the bases loaded to plate the third and final run of the inning.

Louisiana added a pair of runs in the fourth inning and a run in the fifth inning.

In the fourth, Smith and Karli Hubbard each started the inning off with a walk. A fly ball moved Smith to third and a stolen base placed Hubbard in scoring position. Runyan followed with a sacrifice fly to score Smith from third and a double by Orgeron scored Hubbard.

Leading 5-0, the Cajuns slap hitters – Gaspard, Murphy and Smith – each reached base thanks to a pair of hits and a walk. Hubbard followed with an RBI single to give Louisiana a 6-0 cushion.

The Ragin’ Cajuns return to action this weekend as they open up Sun Belt Conference play with a three-game weekend series with Western Kentucky. The series begins with WKU with a doubleheader at Lamson Park at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. The Cajuns conclude the series with a single game at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.

A deep south loop for them.

They played a conference series at Houston this past weekend, played us last night, Centenary tonight, ULM tomorrow night, then on to Memphis for a conference series this weekend.

How do they miss that much school, it seems unfair to them as students.

Yeah, but we can't have a football playoff system because the players would miss too much school. What a bunch of BS.

  6. UL Softball Lady Cajuns Open Sun Belt Play with WKU

Louisiana’s Lady Cajuns start their Sun Belt Conference Title defense with a three-game weekend series with Western Kentucky on Saturday and Sunday at Alfred and Helen Lamson Ragin’ Cajuns Softball Park. The Lady Cajuns and Toppers will play a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon starting at 1:00 p.m. before playing a single game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

The Cajuns enter the weekend ranked No. 16 according to the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll. UL is ranked 19th in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll.

The Cajuns are the defending SBC Champions and preseason favorite to win the conference in 2009. UL finished the 2008 SBC campaign 19-3 en route to their seventh regular season title.

Western Kentucky was the only team in the Sun Belt to win the three-game regular season series against the Cajuns. The Hilltoppers claimed the first game of the series 5-2, before falling to the Cajuns 11-4 in the second game. WKU claimed the series with a 3-2 win in the rubber match of the series.

The Ragin’ Cajuns and Hilltoppers met in the 2008 Sun Belt Conference Tournament for a pair of games. In the opening round, the Cajuns posted an 8-0, six-inning run-rule victory over the Toppers. After downing FIU 8-2, Louisiana took down WKU 3-1 to advance to the SBC Tournament championship game.

Louisiana has a 130-20 (.867) record all-time in the Sun Belt Conference. The Cajuns boast a 63-10 (.863) Sun Belt Conference record at home.

The Cajuns are 7-1 (.875) in Sun Belt Conference season openers. UL’s only loss to open the SBC season came last season as they dropped the first game of the conference season to Western Kentucky. Louisiana is a perfect 5-0 (1.000) when starting Sun Belt play in Lafayette.

After a week of play against tough competition, including three nationally-ranked opponents, two Louisiana softball players were rewarded with Sun Belt Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week honors, respectively. Senior outfielder Karli Hubbard was recognized for her work at the plate while sophomore Ashley Brignac excelled in the circle. The duo was also named LSWA Louisiana Player and Pitcher of the Week.

    Scouting the Opposition
WKU continues play this weekend against defending Sun Belt champions, Louisiana in Lafayette, La. The Lady Toppers will take on the Ragin’ Cajuns at 1 p.m. CST and 3 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.

The Lady Toppers swept Austin Peay in their first home games of the season 8-0 and 4-0. Senior pitcher, Ryan Rogge, was nearly perfect in game one and picked up the second no-hitter of her career and just the fourth in school history while also picking up her 11th win of the season.

This pretty adequately summed up the entire game....

Unfortunately, the students weren't adequately liquored up until about the 3rd inning of the second game. The fact UL can't even get its students drunk before 5pm on a Saturday is completely unacceptable!
