I agree there are variations of multiple different pitches… I.E. Circle change, vulcan change, straight change, 3 finger, and palm ball are all variations of a change up, and 4 seam, 2 seam, cutter, sinker, split finger and fork balls are all variations of a fastball… but by definition a 2 seam fastball is gripped with the index finger and middle finger grip the seams closest together where the horseshoe points in towards each other… what you just described "Some pitchers throw their two-seam with the index and middle fingers together" is a cutter…. "I threw the 2-seam with a split finger grip perpendicular to the narrowest part of the seams … with the ball seated a little deeper into my hand than the 4-seam" sounds like a mix somewhere between a splitter and a sinker…

Ever throw a screw ball? I had a teamate in high school that I caught for who threw a nasty screwball he was only about 5'6'' but throw in the high 80's. He gripped it very similar to his two seamer but flicked his wrist out to give the ball crazy movement. I tried like crazy to learn it but could never make it move like him.

Probably one of the toughest pitches to throw without hurting yourself… To answer your question, yes I have experimented with a screwball, but never was able to control it or have any command of it much less get any real bite/break on it, therefore never threw it in games…

Some may remember Skip Madden … transferred from Northwestern State and played for the Cajuns in '93. He had a nice screwball. However, he did have arm problems.

Have not talked to my old teamate in a years. He pitched a little at Southern and LSU-E but I'm not sure if arm problems were the case of him giving it up.

Btw, back to the original topic, don't look for an opponents take on this story. The rag that is the News Star did not even report on this game. Their current Hoax baseball story up on their website is the Hoax beating the Goathumpers to stay alive in the Tourney. I guess they figure if they don't report on losses to UL they can continue to claim "Almost" status.
