Thread: Pro. Jake Delhomme

  1. Default Delhomme, Panthers rip Falcons

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Rap music blasted from the showers and the Carolina Panthers danced their way through the locker room. There was no shame in celebrating a 3-0 start to the season.

Especially not after a 23-3 victory Sunday over Atlanta to snap Carolina’s six-game losing streak to the Falcons.

“This was real gratifying after six straight losses and them owning us,” defensive end Brentson Buckner said. “Now we know we can beat them.”

But Buckner was quick to caution his teammates not to celebrate too much — after all, Carolina started 3-0 last season only to go on an eight-game skid.

Jake Delhomme had his best game as a starter with 168 yards passing and a 5-yard touchdown pass to Ricky Proehl, and John Kasay kicked field goals of 53, 23 and 38 yards as the Panthers handed Atlanta its third-consecutive loss.

  2. Default jake

Jake has really done a fine job for Carolina since leading them from behind to win against Jacksonville....

Carolina's defense rivals that of the Bucs...so all Jake has to do is be sound and make no mistakes...so far so good!

  3. Default Delhomme eliminates mistakes

Obscured by Carolina's defense and the running of Stephen Davis was the quarterback running the show Sunday.

That would be Jake Delhomme, who made long strides from his first start with the Panthers -- two weeks ago in Carolina's upset at Tampa Bay -- to his second, when the Panthers battered the Falcons 23-3 at Ericsson Stadium.

Delhomme looked confident against Atlanta, and the mistakes -- four interceptions in his first six quarters -- were absent. It was a dramatic improvement over the Tampa trip, when Carolina won but the Bucs trampled over Delhomme's stat sheet.

  4. Default Delhomme’s motivation Sunday not revenge

LAFAYETTE — Jake Delhomme is flourishing in his new home.

Those he left behind aren't doing so well.

But the former University of Louisiana star isn’t about to gloat over his rebirth as the quarterback of the unbeaten Carolina Panthers, not even after seeing the New Orleans Saints get thrashed on Sunday night by Indianapolis to fall to 1-3.

“Of the three games that they lost, two of the teams (Seattle, Indianapolis) are undefeated,” Delhomme said of his former NFL home. “And the other team, the Titans, their only loss was to the Colts.

“So, they’ve lost to three of the top teams in the NFL. I know the kind of talent they have on their roster. I know what’s there.”

The Saints will stagger into Charlotte next Sunday to play a Panthers team that is 3-0 behind Delhomme, a game sure to be filled with emotion.

“I know they’re going to be mad after what happened to them Sunday night,” Delhomme said. “We have to be ready, because it’s going to be a battle.”

Delhomme insists his own emotions will be in check, though.

  5. Default Jake or the Saints?

Area fans split between local hero, state’s team

LOUISIANA La. — Some New Orleans Saints fans in the Acadiana area have had to make some tough choices this year.

Should they remain loyal to their team, or take their support on the road?

The quandry began when Jake Delhomme, a Breaux Bridge native, Teurlings Catholic product and the University of Louisiana's career passing leader, left his professional cocoon as a backup quarterback to Aaron Brooks after the 2002 season ended.

It was clear Brooks was the Saints’ starter, and that Delhomme would have to leave to get a chance to quarterback his own team.

That he landed with divisional rival Carolina has heightened the angst many felt at his departure.

That he might have helped the Saints reach the playoffs last fall if he had been used down the stretch instead of an injured Brooks further deepened the anger for some.

“Jake is doing a good job,” said Lafayette’s Kyle Brister. “He earned the job he has now. He earned the opportunity to start for the Saints. Whether he was local or not, he should have played last year when Brooks was hurt.

  6. UL Football Delhomme too excited to sleep

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Jake Delhomme didn’t need an alarm clock or a wakeup call Sunday morning.

The Carolina quarterback was up at 6:05 a.m., waiting for his opportunity to play against his friends and former team, the New Orleans Saints.

“I woke up a little too early,” he said. “I was ready to play. I had to calm myself down a little bit. I usually stay pretty mellow before a game.”

Delhomme didn’t pass for six touchdowns like Peyton Manning did against the Saints a week earlier, but he turned in an efficient and workmanlike performance, leading the Panthers to a 19-13 victory at Ericsson Stadium.

Delhomme, the Breaux Bridge native who began his career with the Saints before leaving in the off-season for Carolina and the chance to start, completed 15-of-23 passes for 124 yards.

  10. UL Football Delhomme, Panthers   Colts in overtime

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Stephen Davis gave the Carolina Panthers a running start Sunday, then DeShaun Foster took over.

The Panthers’ tag-team running attack bowled over Indianapolis defenders, broke tackles and eventually set up a 47-yard winning field goal from John Kasay to keep the Panthers unbeaten with a 23-20 overtime win.

“Coach let me know Stephen was down and it was going to be on my shoulders,” Foster said. “I just tried to go out there and make the most of my opportunity.”

The Panthers (5-0) have now won seven straight dating to last season and are one of three remaining unbeaten teams in the NFL. The others are Kansas City (6-0) and Minnesota (5-0).

  11. UL Football Jake experiences first loss at Panther helm

Jake experiences first loss as a Carolina Panther, and is now 5-2 as an NFL starter.

He suffered a fumble under center but otherwise had a good day throwing, as he went 31 of 49 for 363 yards with 2 touchdowns.

    His QB rating was 99.28

Saw part of the coaches show today, and nobody seemed to be pointing the finger at Jake for the loss. The coach in fact said the problem was that the team fell behind quickly and could not execute the normal game plan. This team is not built to come from very far behind. The receivers are not there for Jake. I do believe however that the game plan will have to be tweaked when playing dominante physical teams like the Titans,Bucs, and others of that style with more emphasis on ealry passing.
