I know it's the 4th preseason game and it's not really taken all that serious, but all in all, it was an excellent game for him. It seems as if Peete is the coaches choice right now, but Jake definitely did not hurt himself tonight.

I'm a litle miffed at myself. Up till now I have been listening to the presesaon Panther games on the radio. Last night I didn't even know they were playing.

Looks like Jake is returning to form and is starting to get a hold of his recievers positions.

I think the Panthers have good problems at QB.

Perfect Panthers rally past Steelers


Panthers backup Jake Delhomme was a perfect 11-for-11 in the win.
Playing behind an offensive line it considers to be one of the best in the league, the Steelers (1-3) reached the end zone on Zereoue's 19-yard touchdown run on their second possession.

"The offensive line really played well," quarterback Tommy Maddox said. "They looked like they were really in sync with each other. The backs ran hard, the receivers played well and it was good to get off to a fast start like that."

The Steelers also got a TD from their second team, when Batch led a 99-yard drive that ended with his touchdown pass to Cushing for a 14-0 lead. The drive was highlighted with a 49-yard pass from Batch to Chris Doering on a flea flicker.

Zereoue ran for 33 yards on five carries, Batch went 8-for-11 for 104 yards, Maddox, the starter, was 4-for-5 for 65 yards on two possessions and Doering had three catches for 59 yards.

Clark Haggans had two sacks for the Steelers.

"I really liked the play of both of the first teams," coach Bill Cowher said. "I really like the mindset of the team right now."

The Panthers liked the play of all three of their quarterbacks after finally giving the backups a good hard look.

Chris Weinke was decent in his first shot against a legitimate defense, and Jake Delhomme directed all three of Carolina's scoring drives. Either way, Rodney Peete is probably still the opening-day starter.

"I don't think Rodney did anything to lose the job," Delhomme said. "You have to have more than one quarterback in the league to finish the season."

Delhomme, an offseason free agent addition, threw two touchdown passes to lead Carolina to a perfect 4-0 preseason record for the first time in the franchise's nine-year history.

He threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to rookie tight end Mike Seidman in the second quarter, then tossed a 31-yarder to rookie Walter Young late in the third quarter.

Delhomme also was at the helm when Rod Smart scored on a 5-yard run that gave Carolina a 21-7 lead early in the fourth quarter. He finished a perfect 11-for-11 for 123 yards.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Jake Delhomme made one thing perfectly clearly Friday night.

When Delhomme hit a spotless 11-of-11 passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns and engineered three scoring drives in a 21-14 comeback victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, he let coach John Fox know that the Carolina Panthers have options at quarterback in 2003.

Delhomme, who left the New Orleans Saints via free agency after the 2002 season, is vying to unseat 39-year-old Rodney Peete as the Panthers’ starter. It’s a battle that also includes former Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke.

“I felt like I did some good things,” said Delhomme, a former star at Teurlings Catholic and Louisiana. “Guys were making plays for me, and that makes our job a lot easier.

“I’m the first to say I still have a long way to go. I struggled mightily at the beginning (of training camp). There are only about four or five plays that carry over from the West Coast offense we ran in New Orleans, and it’s so ingrained in me.

“I’m not there yet, and I have a long way to go, but I’m starting to get more comfortable. I’m just starting to relax.”

Second-round draft choice Charles Tillman backed the Chicago Bears’ faith in him this summer, and fourth-round pick Ivan Taylor did the same in the Pittsburgh Steelers’ training camp.

The two Ragin’ Cajuns from Louisiana both made the final roster of those two National Football League franchises as the 32 teams reduced their rosters to the regular-season limit of 53 players on Sunday.

Veteran Cajuns elsewhere will also be gearing up for the regular season this week, led by Carolina backup quarterback Jake Delhomme.

Receiver Brandon Stokley, who left Baltimore and signed with Indianapolis in the offseason, was able to play well enough in the Colts’ final two exhibition games to secure a spot as their No. 3 receiver after offseason foot surgery.
