As I may have said before, as alumni (there ya go, Boomer) and fans, we are looking for players who are going to represent us and our beloved university well. Not thugs (see A&M recruits) or bragadocious, "look-at-me" types (see Latech), but real men that display the character we want to see in ourselves. Jake is all of that. He was a grinder before the term was coined. Never let go of the rope before there was even a rope to grab hold of. If I ever get a chance to meet the man in person, I hope to get a chance to thank him for all he has done for my university, and all that he continues to do. Great guy.

Haslett was a tool and Moron Brooks was your QB!!!

I was in school with Jake and have had several opportunities to talk with him. He's as good as it gets. My family and I ran into former NFL great Kevin Greene at Disney World and he really had a lot of respect for Jake and thought he was one of the toughest QB's he faced.

Jake became the starter midway in the opening game of the season, not mid season. Had Coach Stokely trusted his eyes instead of age, weight, experience and started Jake we might have won that game. We lost the Big West title that night, the Vegas Bowl, and a chance of a ten win season.

The guys ahead of him were just lacking to be kind

Jake was a gamer, not a pretty practice player...he started for the panthers after an injury, maybe coach stokley was trusting what he saw day in and day out at practice.

Jake did not take over after injury for the Panthers, Jake came in for a completely inneffective Rodney Peete in week 1 game vs Jacksonville. Jake came in an won the game. Although Peete was often injured the reason he was pulled vs. Jacksonville had nothing to do with injury, it was performance.

I was at those practices. Coach wasn't trusting his practice eyes. Jake was the only qb completing passes in practice. It wasn't close. That's why he quickly tossed Jake out there after an abismel start by the other qb's.

I stand corrected on the injury... But again, he didn't win the job in practice... He got a chance after someone elses demise... Credit to him for never losing it... But he got both his chances by others failures. Some guys are made for games, some guys look great in practice but can't do it under the lights. Brett baer...quoting Hud " worst practice kicker I've ever seen in my life" game on the line I'm taking jake and brett all day long... But there was a reason he did t go into the season as a starter in both situations... But I'm sure people here know more than college and NFL coaches who watched him everyday

I think the Jake's teams were actually better against maybe tougher overall competition than our most recent teams under HUD having to compete in a marginal conference with generally weak opponents.

With so many bowls and weaker competition now as opposed to yesterdays, it is really hard to compare teams in different time periods ... IMHO

It was a pretty easy decision for me. Cajuns fan first, Saints fan second. I decided that I would rather cheer for a different pro team (temporarily) so that I could cheer for a Cajun succeeding at that level. That was easier than continually getting dragged through the incompetence that was the Saints organization at that time.

The second Jake moved on from his run with the Panthers, the Saints gear was back out of the closet. You can do that with pro teams, but not with college teams, particular your alma mater.

Good article about Delhomme. He really should have been the starter at New Orleans I always thought.

What "bragadocious, "look-at-me" types (see Latech)" are you speaking of? It is odd that somehow the Cajuns find a way to criticize other state schools from this article.
