Well, I think the Bears might be a wild card team. Maybe. I did notice that the Saints lost 6 games this year and 3 were to the, what, AFC Central? Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Cincinnatti. And 2 of those teams aren't even going to the playoffs. The Bengals are better than most of the NFC teams in the playoffs, and the Steelers would give most of them a tough game.

I don't usually like it when people say that this team couldn't win in that division or conference. It might have some merit, but i usually won't give it much, especially in the NFL where you play nearly half of your games against division foes, and more or less build your team to beat those teams. When the Falcons drafted Vick, the other three teams made changes on D to inhibit him. Each division has their own makeup and playing style, so if the Saints or the Bears were an AFC team, the would be built totally different and might compete in that conf.

As far as when they played those teams this year, in defense of my beloved saints, it was during the middle of the season, right after they went on the first 1/4-1/3 of the season run. Their quality of play fell off a bit and they turned the ball over a lot and weren't playing like they were at the beginning of the season or over the last 4/5 games. Sure that could have something to do with the other teams as well, but if the saints played those teams again and didn't turn the ball over or drop passes, it would have been much different.

  4. UL Football Delhomme ends disappointing season on high note

Every time there was a television shot of him on the Carolina Panther sideline, it was obvious that his right thumb hurt like crazy. But people who know Jake Delhomme even a little bit knew that wasn’t going to keep him off the field Sunday.

The former UL quarterback standout had missed the previous three games because of that thumb, two of which the Panthers lost in falling out of the playoff mainstream. But the competitor in him wanted to end his season on the field, not watching from the sidelines, even though Sunday’s game meant nothing to either his team or the New Orleans Saints as far as postseason play.

Delhomme quarterbacked the entire 31-21 win at the Superdome Sunday, one that came over a Saints squad headed for the playoffs and with a first-round bye. New Orleans substituted liberally and played much of the final three quarters with backups in many positions.

That might have been part of the reason for Delhomme’s best quarterback rating of the season, a 123.3 mark that included 23-of-27 completions for 207 yards and two scores. But it also came after nearly a month of inactivity and with a thumb that hurt every time he took a snap.

  5. UL Football Jakes job likely secure

There's also been talk that Carolina is considering parting with quarterback Jake Delhomme, who is due a $2 million roster bonus in the spring. That scenario appears unlikely, especially since there's probably not a QB on the upcoming market as good as the gritty Cajun.

The Panthers will more likely be searching for a backup, as Chris Weinke will be 35 next season and wasn't very impressive when filling in for an injured Delhomme late in the year.

    DELHOMME-COMING

Delhomme returned to the lineup after having missed the previous three weeks because of a ligament tear in his right thumb. The Louisiana native felt right at home at the Superdome and put together one of his best performances of the season in Sunday's win. Delhomme completed 23-of-27 passes for 207 yards and a pair of scores, both of which went to superstar wideout Steve Smith.

Fox said that his quarterback's thumb did tighten up late in the game, but that he refused to come out.

"It says a lot about what he's made of and the reason why he's our starting quarterback and will remain that way as we move forward," Fox remarked. "We definitely missed him during that three-game stretch, and it was sure good to have him back."

Smith finished the day with 85 yards on seven catches and ended his Pro Bowl season with 83 receptions for 1,166 yards and nine touchdowns, all team bests.

If the Saints needed the game, they would have won the game...it's speculation on my part, so my saying that is as valid as somebody else saying "no they wouldn't have," but c'mon. Be real.

Ditto, dat!! Jake needs a little more support on the Defensive side of the ball and maybe another lineman or 2, and a reciever.

Jakes the man still, supporting cast is all he needs.
