Panthers Come Back Again, Tie Patriots at 29-29 With 1:08 Left in a Classic Super Bowl

HOUSTON Feb. 1 — The Carolina Panthers stormed back to tie the New England Patriots 29-29 with 1:08 left Sunday night, yet another dramatic score in what quickly was becoming one of the most entertaining Super Bowls in history.
As New England tried to move down the field to get in position for a field goal, the possibility loomed that the game would go to overtime for the first time in its 38-year history.





The Panthers, who had to come back from a 14-point deficit earlier in the fourth quarter, tied it on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Jake Delhomme to Ricky Proehl. That capped a seven-play, 80-yard drive that took up just 1:43.

The Patriots surged ahead 29-22 with 2:51 to play on a 1-yard pass from Tom Brady to Mike Vrabel.

After the Panthers took a 22-21 lead with 6:53 left on an 85-yard strike from Delhomme to Muhsin Muhammad the longest TD pass in Super Bowl history New England went to work on an 11-play, 68-yard drive. On third-and-9, Brady hit David Givens for 18 yards. Two plays later, Brady threw to Vrabel for the score.

The Patriots went for the 2-point conversion, and Kevin Faulk ran up the middle to make it 29-22. The Panthers tried a pair of 2-point passes in the fourth quarter and failed on both.

Carolina fell behind 21-10 early in the fourth but cut the Patriots' lead to 21-16 with 12:39 left on DeShaun Foster's 33-yard run. New England then drove to the Carolina 9-yard line, but Tom Brady's pass was intercepted in the end zone by Reggie Howard and returned to the 10.

On third-and-10 from the 15, Delhomme threw a near-perfect pass to Muhammad, who had broken free amid zone coverage. Eugene Wilson caught up to Muhammad, but the receiver shook him off and dove into the end zone. Delhomme overthrew Kevin Dyson on the conversion attempt.

The game was a defensive struggle early on, and after the longest scoreless drought to open a Super Bowl, the teams found the offensive touch with stunning regularity late in the first half. New England led 14-10 at halftime on two 5-yard touchdown passes by Brady, but Carolina got a huge boost with a 50-yard field goal from John Kasay as time expired.

The teams combined for 24 points in the final 3:05 of the half. They had gone a record 26:55 without any points before Brady hit Deion Branch for a 7-0 lead. That was set up when Mike Vrabel got the Patriots' third sack of the half and stripped the ball from Delhomme. Richard Seymour grabbed it at the Carolina 20.

Brady, hardly known for his scrambling, ran 12 yards on third-and-7 to the Panthers 5 then leaped up and vigorously signaled first down. On the next play, off play-action, Brady lobbed the ball to a wide-open Branch.

Carolina, finally finding some offensive rhythm by opening up a bit, got right back in it. Delhomme, previously under siege, found time to float a 23-yard sideline pass to Muhammad. He then hit Proehl for 15 yards and, on third down, Steve Smith beat Tyrone Poole down the left sideline to haul in a perfect throw for a 39-yard score with 1:07 to go in the second quarter.

Enough scoring? Hardly.

Branch beat Ricky Manning Jr. on a post pattern for a 52-yard gain to the Panthers 14, and two plays later, Givens made it 14-7. That left 18 seconds on the clock.

But the Patriots' kickoff was short and weak and tight end Kris Mangum returned it 12 yards to the Carolina 47. Stephen Davis broke a 21-yard run and Kasay hit his field goal.
