HOUSTON — In the first scoreless opening quarter of the Super Bowl in 12 years, the New England Patriots (search) and Carolina Panthers (search) barely threatened to get points Sunday.



Not since the Redskins and Bills were 0-0 after 15 minutes in 1992 has there been no scoring in the first period. It was the fifth time in Super Bowl (search) history that neither team got points in the opening quarter.

But the Patriots at least came close, while the Panthers gained only 13 yards in the period.

New England looked sharp early, stopping Carolina on three plays and then getting a 28-yard punt return up the middle from Troy Brown. That set up the Patriots at the Carolina 47, and Tom Brady had completions of 16 yards to Deion Branch and 12 to Brown.

But they bogged down and Adam Vinatieri, hero of their Super Bowl victory two years ago with a game-winning 48-yard field goal as time expired, missed wide right from 31 yards. Vinatieri has missed only three of 34 field goals indoors — all of the misses at Reliant Stadium (search), including two against the Texans during the season.

It was the first opening series in six games on which New England didn't score.

The Panthers didn't get anywhere on any series, mostly going three-and-out. On their second possession, Mike Vrabel's third-down sack forced a punt.

And when Carolina made the Pats punt, it once again went three-and-out as Jake Delhomme got little time to throw and the Patriots' stingy run defense gave Stephen Davis no room.

The Patriots again had good field position on their third possession, beginning at the Carolina 49. But they were stymied by Will Witherspoon, who was unblocked on a reverse by Brown and slammed him to the ground for a 10-yard loss.

Carolina's initial first down came with 2:07 remaining in the period, and was gained by penalty — a holding call on cornerback Ty Law in coverage of Muhsin Muhammad. But Todd Sauerbrun wound up punting for a fourth time.
