Panthers, Patriots Tied at 7-7

Steve Smith hauled in a perfect 39-yard pass from Jake Delhomme with 1:07 before halftime of the Super Bowl on Sunday, giving the Carolina Panthers a 7-7 tie against the New England Patriots.
The Panthers countered quickly after the Patriots took a 7-0 lead on Tom Brady's 5-yard pass over the middle to Deion Branch with 3:05 left in the second quarter.
That possession was set up when Delhomme fumbled after being sacked at the Panthers' 20. Mike Vrabel caused and recovered the fumble.
Before the quick scores, defense dominated the game. Adam Vinatieri, the hero of the Patriots' championship run two years ago, missed two field-goal attempts - a 31-yarder on the team's opening possession that went wide right, and a 36-yarder that was partially blocked.
That gave the Panthers momentum, but Delhomme fumbled on the third play of the next possession.
Vinatieri's 48-yard field goal as time expired against the St. Louis Rams in 2002 gave the Patriots their first Super Bowl victory. He had missed only three of 34 field goals indoors this season - all coming at Reliant Stadium, including two against the Texans.
New England looked sharp early, stopping Carolina on three plays and then getting a 28-yard punt return up the middle from Troy Brown. That set up the Patriots at the Carolina 47, and Brady had completions of 16 yards to Deion Branch and 12 to Brown. But they bogged down, and Vinatieri missed.
It was the first opening series in six games on which New England didn't score.
The first quarter also marked the first scoreless opening period of the Super Bowl in 12 years.
The annual extravaganza preceding the nation's biggest sporting spectacle featured performances by Toby Keith, Willie Nelson and Aerosmith, as well as a tribute for the first anniversary of the Columbia space shuttle disaster, which claimed the lives of seven astronauts over Texas. Groban sang a song called "You Raise Me Up" to honor the astronauts, whose families were invited to the game.
At mess halls and recreation centers on bases across Iraq, U.S. troops tuned in to the game, which kicked off about 2:30 a.m. Monday local time. In Tikrit, Saddam Hussein's hometown and the headquarters for the 4th Infantry Division, troops watched at the U.S. Army recreation center - a three-story palace built by the ousted dictator, with chandeliers, mosaic floors, a sweeping staircase and a man-made lake.
NFL officials said the decision on whether to open or close the stadium's retractable roof would depend on the weather, not security concerns. They kept the roof closed for the pregame show, and parachutists vaulted off the beams at the end of Aerosmith's set. At kickoff, the roof remained closed, as a line of storms approached the city; there was a 60-percent chance of rain.
Regardless of the roof, the Super Bowl stadium was heavily secured: Fans waited in long lines before going through any of the 90 metal detectors stationed around the stadium. Concrete barricades stretched for blocks and a no-fly zone was imposed over a seven-mile area above.
"We want people to think of Super Bowl security kind of like heat and air conditioning. It just goes with the territory," said the NFL's director of security, Milt Ahlerich.

HOUSTON - After the longest scoreless drought to open a Super Bowl, the New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers found the offensive touch with stunning regularity late in the first half Sunday.
New England led 14-10 at halftime on two 5-yard touchdown passes by Tom Brady, but Carolina got a huge boost with a 50-yard field goal from John Kasay as time expired.
The teams combined for 24 points in the final 3:05 of the half after both defenses had been dominant.
The teams went a record 26:55 without any points before Brady hit Deion Branch for a 7-0 lead. That was set up when Mike Vrabel got the Patriots' third sack of the half and stripped the ball from Jake Delhomme, Richard Seymour grabbed it at the Carolina 20.
Brady, hardly known for his scrambling, ran 12 yards on third-and-7 to the Panthers 5 - then leaped up and vigorously signaled first down. On the next play, off play-action, Brady lobbed the ball to a wide-open Branch
Carolina, finally finding some offensive rhythm by opening up a bit, got right back in it. Delhomme, previously under siege, found time to float a 23-yard sideline pass to Muhsin Muhammad. He then hit Ricky Proehl for 15 yards and, on third down, Steve Smith beat Tyrone Poole down the left sideline to haul in a perfect throw for a 39-yard score with 1:07 to go in the second quarter.
Enough scoring? Hardly.
Branch beat Ricky Manning Jr. on a post pattern for a 52-yard gain to the Panthers 14, and two plays later, David Givens made it 14-7. That left 18 seconds on the clock.
But the Patriots' kickoff was short and weak and tight end Kris Mangum returned it 12 yards to the Carolina 47. Stephen Davis broke a 21-yard run and Kasay hit his field goal.
Earlier in the quarter, the Patriots methodically drove to the Carolina 38, where Brady's sneak on third-and-inches was marked short. Antowain Smith's run on fourth down was spotted as a first down by half a football, but Panthers coach John Fox challenged the placement.
Referee Ed Hochuli upheld the first down, and New England reached the 18 before Adam Vinatieri's 36-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Shane Burton.
In the first quarter, Vinatieri, the hero of the Super Bowl two years ago, missed from 31 yards in the first scoreless opening quarter in 12 years. At least the Patriots threatened once; the Panthers had 13 yards and four punts.
Not since the Redskins and Bills were 0-0 after 15 minutes in 1992 has there been no scoring in the first period. It was the fifth time it happened in Super Bowl history.
New England looked sharp early, stopping Carolina on three plays and then getting a 28-yard punt return from Troy Brown. That set up the Patriots at the Carolina 47, and Brady had completions of 16 yards to Branch and 12 to Brown.
But they bogged down and Vinatieri, whose 48-yard field goal as time expired beat St. Louis for the title in 2002, missed wide right. Vinatieri has missed only three of 34 field goals indoors - all of the misses at Reliant Stadium, including two against the Texans during the season.
It was the first opening series in six games on which New England didn't score.
Carolina's initial first down came with 2:07 remaining in the period, and was gained by penalty - a holding call on cornerback Ty Law in coverage of Muhammad. But Todd Sauerbrun wound up punting for a fourth time.
