Thread: Pro. Jake Delhomme

  1. Default Jake NFL's #4 off-season pickup

"4. Jake Delhomme, QB, Carolina: He wasn't even the most highly sought after Jake in the free-agent market, but how much more do we need to see after watching him lead the Panthers on that game-winning 78-yard, fourth-quarter drive against the Bucs?"

  2. Default Cajun up with Jake: Confidence

On Wednesday's practice: It was nice, especially for the big guys, not to have to go out in pads. But we just need to keep on working. We had a bad taste in our mouths after last week coming out on Wednesday. I think we learned a good lesson in Houston, to be honest with you. This team sees that we can do some good things. We just need to stay after it. In this League, you have to be ready every week. We're facing a team that had a bye week and then came back with a win, playing pretty well against a team that was leading its division in Seattle. We have a tough matchup.

On winning without running back Stephen Davis last week: I think it gave us a lot (of confidence). Certainly we would have loved to have him, but who knows what this did for us in the long run? Not only for myself, but for the receivers, DeShaun (Foster), the line, the defense, and the coaches. Stephen has been our guy, and we had him every game up until then. I'm sure there were question marks, but the guys who played all stepped up, and that can only do good things for your team.

On whether he opened some eyes on the coaching staff with his performance: Yes and no. We want to run the ball. That's known, and that's what we hang our hat on. But we feel that given the opportunity we can do some good things in the passing game. We've done it a couple of times now. I kind of wish we wouldn't have been in that situation Sunday, but we answered. That's the biggest thing. We came back and we answered, and the defense came up with a huge stop. I think it just says something about this team.

On the Redskins defense: They have a lot of big names on that defense. They have two very good corners in Champ Bailey and Fred Smoot. The three linebackers are extremely good, and they added Darrell Russell on the defensive line. They played a lot better versus Seattle. They were down 14-3 early on, and then all of a sudden they shut Seattle down for the rest of the game. We know what they can do offensively. They do have some weapons and a pretty good young quarterback. We'd like to run it and when we throw it be efficient in the passing game.

  5. UL Football Jake is the Comeback Kid

When you think of the greatest comeback quarterbacks in NFL history, some of the NFL's best come to mind: Dan Marino, John Elway, Joe Montana …

    Jake Delhomme?

Consider the credentials: Three overtime road victories; a game-winning drive against Tampa Bay and, on Sunday, Delhomme drove the Panthers 71 yards in three minutes for the game-winning touchdown against the Redskins. So much for those critics who questioned if Delhomme could lead this team to victory.

If the Panthers fulfill the prophecy of Rank's Incredible Championship Equation, don't underestimate this victory (the Panthers' first against Washington). In a league where the trend is to lose the week following a huge victory, this shows the championship character of this team.

  6. UL Football Steve Young talks about Jake (Emerging Force)

    By Steve Young
    Special to ESPN.com

With their strong running game and stifling defense, it looked as if the Carolina Panthers were on track to replicate the 2000 Baltimore Ravens. But under that guise, I wasn't completely sold on their ability to make it to Houston and Super Bowl XXXVIII, that is, until the emergence of quarterback Jake Delhomme.

Earlier this season, the Panthers passing game was nonexistent. But over the last month, it appears that all of that has changed. Delhomme has proved that he has the ability to step up and win games. That ability was epitomized when he calmly orchestrated the Panthers final, game-winning drive against the Tampa Bay Bucs two weeks ago.

  10. UL Football Delhomme delivers again in the clutch

CHARLOTTE-- Jake Delhomme showed poise in comeback victories against Jacksonville and Tampa Bay.

Delhomme engineered another game-winning drive Sunday against the Washington Redskins, and the secret to his last-minute success was on display on the game's most pivotal play. The Panthers trailed 17-13 when they lined up for fourth-and-1 from their 38 with 2:50 remaining.

Instead of handing to Stephen Davis, Delhomme dropped back to pass against a Redskin blitz.

Delhomme could have hurried a throw, but he remained calm and hit Davis with a short toss to the right.

Davis, who gained 25 yards, wasn't the first option. He was Delhomme's fifth.

"He's stepped in and become the undisputed leader of the offense,"left tackle Todd Steussie said of his quarterback. "It's not by seizing control, it's based on his personality."

The matchup between Davis and his former team drew plenty of attention, but Delhomme threw for 317 yards and completed a fourth-quarter comeback for the second straight week.

Delhomme scanned the field from left to right on the fourth-down play. Wideout Steve Smith was his first read, followed by tight ends Jermaine Wiggins and Mike Seidman in the middle of the field and Muhsin Muhammad to the right.
