Does turning our back on Jake mean rooting for him every week except when he plays the Saints. Wanting him to do well and supporting him except when he plays the team that we have watched our whole lives.
If so, what happens when the Panthers play the Broncos or the Bears play the Steelers. Does the world implode because two Cajuns are playing and they both left blood, sweat and tears on Cajun Field.
Jerry Baldwin left blood sweat and tears on Cajun Field. Do we leave the University because he left.
I don't want to generalize, but I, and others may as well, find it condescending when you say there is something wrong with me because I support a team that doesn't give a Rat's ass about me. But the players may, they work hard and give their all. I don't cheer for the Saints' front office bottom line. I cheer for the collection of players and coaches who where the Saints uniform on Sundays. And to some degree, I think each of them does want to please the fans, and has their interests at heart. If they didn't many of them would not donate their time and energy back to the community.
I love Jake. I want him to do well. I will always remember what he did for the program. But if our loyalty is to be to the guys who left this program and are in the pros, then we could have no favorite team, because then we would be at some point pulling against guys who played for this university.
There is no way to distinguish between the sacrifices that Charles Tillman, Jake, Stokely, Ike, CC or even Brian Mitchel made to the program. We're proud of al lof them and want them to do well.
