Thread: Band ... Music ... musings

Ragin' Cajuns Re: Band ... Music ... musings

OK guys, looks like it's time for a little history lesson (sorry Turbine, but my info's better than yours in this instance!). When I was in POA (1982-1986), basketball games were only starting to become commercialized like they are now and like football games have become. When we played at football games, the director had complete control over when the Band played and he actually WATCHED the game to see when we should and shouldn't play. Now you have some goof up in the pressbox, or down on the sideline, with a radio trying to tell the director when and what to play and when to sit quietly while the pressbox idiot plays rap music and runs TV commercials on the big screen and it just isn't working. It's even worse at basketball games because they play even MORE of that rediculous rap nonsense when the Brass could and SHOULD be playing!!!

That's what happens when you let the sponsors take over!! Don't get me wrong, I love the corporate sponsorship as much as the next guy, but you can't let it take over the entire game!!!!

First off, my beef was mainly with the Jazz. I remember them coming to our parties and being friends and being social with us, and now, I don't know any of them with the exception of my cousin Kyle. Secondly, who says bad things about the cheerleaders?? We (I mean guys... mostly.) love the cheerleaders and the Jazz, y'all are hot, and when y'all start a cheer, especially during the basketball games, we try to cheer along and get into it with y'all. I'm not trying to criticize y'all, because you're all in the same position as us. Y'all do what you're told like we do. I was criticizing the event staff and the people that plan the games.

Someone please tell the director that when they play music over the PA... that is not the time for the band to start playing.... and hey PA dude, if the band starts to play, stop the music. This isnt rocket science.

I am a current member of The Pride of Acadiana Marching Band and the Ragin Brass Basket Ball Band and believe me we would love to play more most of the time. What gets on my nerves is when people keep shouting at us to" Play something". Its not the players decision to play what we want when we want it, then you would just have a jumbled mess all the time. I am a huge UL fan and love to show my team spirit by playing but we do need some breaks or we wouldn't make it to half time before our lips are too worn out from playing. SO please understand that when we are not playing, there is ussually a very good reason behind it not simple we don't want to or not allowed to.

As a side note to this discussion. The Lafayette High Band has advanced to the Semi finals of the Bands of America Grand National competition today at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis Indiana. They are among the last 33 bands in the competition and will be performing in the Semi Finals Saturday at 2:15. They are the only band ever from Louisiana to advance this far.

The finals will be later Saturday and consist of the best 12 band from the semi finals.

    The tradition continues.

WOW! Seriously, that is impressive! Kudos to the LHS band! By the way, many times, when the wind and weather cooperate on Friday nights, I get to hear them at my house of off Guilbeau Road. Reminds me of my own Friday night football nights as a band member (not at LHS, but another Acadiana area school). Good times, good times!

All the best to Scotty Walker and the Lafayette High Marching Band!! They're one of the hardest working groups I've ever seen and Scotty and his staff have put together one of the most imaginative shows I've seen in years at any level. These kids deserve to be where they are today!!!
